During pairing, for some odd reason, the Canary requires both Bluetooth and Location Services to be on (Android install). This caused my pairing to fail multiple times as I did not permit Canary to have Location permissions, I didn't think it was necessary and didn't want to share this. After multiple attempts at pairing failed, I enabled Location permissions and the devices were successfully paired. Post-pairing, I removed Canary's location permission and the device has been functioning fine since. I would prefer if the device could connect simply through Bluetooth only. I also did not like that the camera required an address during setup.
Setup is very simple and if you are looking for a camera to plug in, pair, and get going, this is it. I found no options to set a static IP address, and there is no web app accessible from a browser, you must use an Android or iPhone. You also only get 24 hours of recorded video via the Canary Cloud without a subscription. There is no SD card slot. The Canary Flex does not have a RJ-45 connection for Ethernet, and must always be connected to WiFi.
The camera's performance overall is sufficient for home indoor and outdoor use for general surveillance. Due to the 720p camera and wide field of view, pixelation is visible on targets 15 to 20 feet away. Therefore, the camera is good for large, overview shots to determine movements and behaviors of targets. Since you can't change the camera's focal length, you are stuck with the 116 degree field of view. As mentioned before, you can't change the camera's aspect ratio either, so a hallway shot looking at a door results in a lot of wasted wall being recorded.
The camera performed well in low light conditions and with a super bright LED flashlight SureFire 6PX Tactical Single-Output LED Flashlight with anodizded aluminum body, Black shone directly into the imager (see images) with no severe blooming or image degradation The camera's wide dynamic range compensation needs improvement (see images) where the camera is positioned in a scene with bright back lighting and a dark foreground.
For recording and motion detection, you must keep the device plugged in to capture an entire event. When not plugged in, recording began approximately 5 seconds after motion was detected, resulting in me already passing the camera and not able to tell who entered. This is mainly why I would recommend the camera be placed in a location where overall movements and behaviors are being monitored like a living room or backyard. When the camera is plugged in, the Canary does a wonderful job of recording a second or two pre-motion so that you can see the entire event.
Overall, I am satisfied with the device for home use or personal use. I will be using it as a hotel room camera when I am traveling and will use my Zuni Travel WiFi router ZuniConnect Travel Router + USB Charging Port to power and communicate with the device.
From a security standpoint, material possessions mean little to me. In the last ten years, I have been burglarized twice (during both instances I was living in New York City, and I have long since moved away). I’ve had all of my belongings stolen and in both cases had an idea of who the perp might be, but no evidence to back it up. During both burglaries, my primary concern has been my pets. TVs, computers, etc are all replaceable, but the feeling of coming home to a pet happily wagging their tail can not. Enter Canary.
My excitement peaked the very second I opened the box. Originally, I had been considering the All-in-One, but the Flex seems perfect for my little apartment. I was pleased to discover that it had a built-in battery and could be used wireless, but nevertheless placed it near an outlet. It came with a very long micro-USB cable to make charging even easier and also included wall-mount hardware. I placed mine near electronics in my living room so the recording light would blend in and not draw attention to itself, as other reviewers have noted.
Initially, I found the app set-up on my phone to take longer than expected, since the instructions say set-up can take 10-15 minutes, but I figured it was an Android-based bug since I’ve had issues with Bluetooth in the past on other smart home related devices. I jumped online to chat with Canary support and a friendly representative had me up and running in no time.
I’ve had to fidget with my settings a bit to get it to switch between home/away/night mode per my preferences. I tend to be a very private person so I have recording turned off while I’m at home. For whatever reason, I’ve always had issues with my Android disconnecting and reconnecting to my home Wi-Fi router, which I suspect is the case here when Flex is trying to determine if I’m located near my geofence to switch between operating modes.
I’ve really enjoyed the functionality. I travel a lot for business and love that I can now check in on my cats – or cat sitter – anytime I want. And I can’t wait for the two-way talk to roll out in mid-September! I’ve upgraded to the annual membership as well: if I were regularly connected to any data network I think the out of the box package would be fine, but given my intermittent connectivity it’s imperative that I can review data for days at a time.
It’s obvious to me that the team at Canary passionately developed a product that they’re proud of, and I’m thrilled to have one in my home.
