Smart Home Security for Everyone
We believe anyone should be able to go anywhere, do anything, and still know what’s happening at home. The problem is, traditional security systems are hard to install and harder to use. And what if you rent? It’s nearly impossible to take conventional systems with you when you move.
That’s why we designed Canary, a complete security system packed into a single device you control from your smartphone. Canary is a modern approach to home security, and since it doesn’t need additional sensors, setup takes minutes, not days. Download the app, set Canary on a flat surface, plug it in, connect it to the internet, and you’re ready to go.
With no contracts or required monthly fees and free cloud storage of recent events, Canary works right out of the box to protect the people and places you care about most. And since Canary’s intelligent notifications only alert you when something unusual happens, you’ll make smart decisions when something’s wrong and feel connected when everything’s right.
No installation. Set up in seconds.
Not only is Canary the smartest home security solution on the market, it’s also the simplest. Just set Canary on a shelf or table, plug it in, and connect it to the internet using the free iPhone or Android app. That’s it.
Generally, we recommend one Canary per entryway and one per floor. It's easy to start with one and add more as needed.
Real-time alerts and emergency options.
The Canary app keeps you connected to your home no matter where you are. When it senses anything out of the ordinary, it sends a notification with encrypted HD video and audio directly to your phone. Use the Canary app to sound Canary’s built-in 90+dB siren or connect directly with the local police, fire, or EMS near your home.
No need to mess with a keypad or even pull out your phone. Canary senses when you come and go, and automatically changes modes.
Personalized Safety Net
If you think you might miss notifications due to travel, meetings, or any other reason, set up some other users so that a minor issue doesn’t become a major problem.
Canary makes it easy for families, friends, and loved ones to look out for and protect each other. Simply share access using the free canary app with anyone in your household.
Canary's system can monitor multiple locations, so you can have devices in your apartment, your vacation home, and anywhere else you want to secure, and control them all from the same app.
Securing video and data is our top priority. We built the Canary system to be simple to use without sacrificing any of the safeguards that customers expect when streaming and storing video. All parts of our system—from the device to the cloud to the app—employ extensive security measures to protect private data, such as AES 256-bit symmetric-key encryption, Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), secure HTTP access (HTTPS) using TLS/SSL, and more.

The app still is terrible. The playback on Android is flawed and it won't let me fast forward in a clip. Occasionally I have had clips that are an hour long because there are lots of fast moving clouds (creating rapid light transitions) that create a sequence of motion events. It is impossible for me to jump to a point that I care about and I am forced to download the clip (which takes a really long time for an hour long clip) and then use my phones native player. Occasionally even with shorter clips that consist of two motion events it will refuse to ever transition to the play the second event. It is also a huge data hog. It easily chews through several hundred megabytes if you want to playback a couple clips (which you will always need to do to find a specific event since Canary tags so many false movements). I can stream youtube for hours without seeing the same data impact.
My wife uses the iphone app. Same data issues and slightly more reliable playback. You can at least jump to a midpoint in the clip but she often runs to random playback errors as well. I can only hope that if there is ever an emergent situation where we need to review Canary footage that the apps will actually work. Keep in mind the apps are the only way to review Canary footage.Read more ›
Thank you again for your continued feedback. I wanted to update and let you know that last week we released an update for Android that contained a fix for the scrubbing issues that you described in your most recent review update.
I would love to have the opportunity to talk to you more about your experience and issues, but due to the limited information provided by Amazon, I'm not able to see if you've submitted any support tickets.
Please feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org to my attention and I'd love to talk with you more in depth about your issues and experience. Thanks again for your feedback.
- Matt from Canary
The several updates over the past months have added many features that I wanted such as the ability to save videos to the camera roll on my phone, the ability to delete videos from the cloud and the ability for the device to auto reconnect to the internet if it loses it's connection.
I would like to see these issues taken care of:
- when canary is armed and the device switches to the regular vision from night vision the device makes an activity alert out if it, no need for this.
- there needs to be a way to set custom monitoring alerts for temp, air quality and humidity. Such as a sudden rise in temperature (fire) should send an alert.
- I would like a more obvious alert tone, so that if my Canary noticed movement while I was asleep in the middle of the night I would wake up
-I have one canary in the bedroom where our gun safe is and another in the living room. I would like the ability to arm the living room one so that we could have the canary on at night. We currently can't do this because both have to be armed, and the one in the bedroom would constantly alert us to every movement we made throughout the night.
- My devices still go offline several times per week. While they have added the ability for them to auto reconnect, it would be nice if the frequency of them going offline was less. I hope the reliability of this device continues to increase through more software updates.
The camera on the Canary is far superior during the day.
The night mode is fantastic as shown below and the PIPER DOES NOT HAVE A NIGHT CAMERA unless you spend $80 more than the Canary.
The timeline is much more intuitive and, unlike the Piper, there's not a 15 second break between alerts and the next set of recordings.
The Canary is much more aesthetically pleasing and, in addition, does not stand out and draw attention to itself for what it is intended to do.
The wide angle camera covers my entire living room when situated correctly.
The setup was far easier than with the Piper and the audio cable setup is ingenious!
The air quality monitor is a nice advantage.
The power cable is very long and allows for strategic placement.
The status light ring at the bottom is a nice plus.
Ethernet connectivity is a nice feature I utilized instead of the wireless setup.
Only the Piper has a "loud noise alert" which I discovered to be very handy in alerting me when my dogs go at one another or there's some other disturbance in the house not necessarily related to movement. It allows the event to stand out and that's a nice feature for sure.
I can talk through the Piper unit when away from home to tell the dogs to knock it off or to communicate with my family of need be. Nice feature not available on the Canary
There's no battery backup if power is lost with the Canary. Piper has battery backup.Read more ›
I’ve used Canary for 2 months, and I’m ready to write a review about my experience with it thus far.
Canary is tiny and inconspicuous (It stands 6" high and is 3" wide) and is well designed. Setting up Canary is a piece of cake. Unbox and follow instructions from the app. It supports iOS and Android (iPhone 4S or later running iOS 7 or 8, Android devices running Android 4.0 or later).
--- FEATURES ---
Canary packs a lot of features into its small body. It’s powered by a micro-USB power adapter and connects to your network via ethernet or wireless.
Camera and Motion Detection: It has a 1080p HD camera equipped with a 147° wide-angle lens so it can see and record a large area of your home and night vision it can see in the dark. The wide-angle lens allows it to view multiple rooms if you position it properly at certain spots of your home. If you have a large home with many rooms or multiple floors, you may want to consider getting more than 1.
Motion detection allows Canary to record activity when it detects motion when motion-activated recording is enabled, and a built-in microphone also records sound. Both the video and audio are stored in Canary’s cloud storage for up to 90 days (based on your subscription plan). When it detects motion, you’ll get a push notification on your device.
Modes: Canary can be put into 3 modes: Armed, Disarmed, and Privacy.Read more ›
