Cancel Culture Curse: From Rage to Redemption in a World Gone Mad Hardcover – April 11, 2023

Purchase options and add-ons

In a groundbreaking first, cancel culture and its core elements are clearly defined, and a convincing case is made against this fundamentally un-American practice.

Cancel culture is an insidious force in society today. In the seconds it takes to make one regrettable social media post—or wind up on the wrong side of a false accusation or misunderstanding—reputations, relationships, and careers are destroyed. Have we entered an era when people cannot make mistakes; where no apology or change of heart can ever deliver forgiveness?

Making a comeback used to be a celebrated American ideal. But have the roads to redemption been permanently blocked by internet mobs seeking vengeance?

In
The Cancel Culture Curse, global crisis manager Evan Nierman and his colleague Mark Sachs examine the impact of cancel culture in today’s media-driven world. The authors also explore the history of cancel culture and the trends that have fostered it, defining the telltale elements that are hallmarks of such campaigns.

Nierman and Sachs provide fascinating case studies and interviews with well-known victims of cancel culture, including philosopher Peter Boghossian, Mumford & Sons cofounder Winston Marshall, and “San Francisco Karen,” among others. Also featured, is a playbook for rebounding from public shame, helping readers avoid becoming the latest targets of “cancel vultures” who enjoy picking apart the remains of those left to die on the side of the Internet highway.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“As a survivor of cancel culture who has fought back, I can attest that this book matters. It is an important part of the struggle for liberty and against the curse of conformity. One can agree or disagree with parts of it—read it and decide for yourself—but all who support freedom of speech must join in the authors’ war against those who would cancel our hard-earned rights.”
—Alan Dershowitz, Harvard Law School Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law, Emeritus; and New York Times bestselling author

"With the publication of
The Cancel Culture Curse, Skyhorse is continuing its proud tradition of fearlessly addressing the most controversial and critical issues of the day. A word to the wise: safeguard your future and the future of freedom of speech generally by paying attention to this book. Skyhorse takes the strongest possible stance against censorship of any kind.”
—Tony Lyons, president and publisher, Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.

“In clear, easy to understand prose,
The Cancel Culture Curse is the definitive guide to the malignant phenomenon that’s come to characterize modern American life. If you want to learn about cancel culture and make a contribution to eliminating this uniquely idiotic and toxic social ill, this is the book for you.”
—Peter Boghossian, founding faculty, University of Austin

“Policymakers in Washington and business leaders around the world: ignore this book at your own risk.
The Cancel Culture Curse is a compelling, clear-eyed assessment of the potentially devastating consequences of life in the digital age.”
—Jon Missner, managing partner, Stein Mitchell Beato & Missner LLP

The Cancel Culture Curse is an important book and so timely. The topics it addresses apply to every human being, since people often move far too quickly to criticize one another. Cancel culture is an extreme level of criticism that directs energy in a negative direction, instead of helping people resolve misdoings and guiding them towards leading a more uplifting and rewarding life.”
—Dandapani, Hindu priest and author of The Power of Unwavering Focus

“Cancel culture constitutes a clear and present danger to our nation and American society.
The Cancel Culture Curse makes a compelling case for better communication, as well as more compassion, forgiveness, and unity.”
—Anthony Scaramucci, founder and managing partner, SkyBridge

“The Cancel Culture Curse is exceptionally well written, showcasing how crumbling societal norms and raging online mobs are driving America away from its most cherished, foundational values.”
—Armstrong Williams, entrepreneur, author, and national TV personality

This book is not for the faint of heart. It starts with a roar and continues to keep the pedal on the floor throughout, despite being a non-fiction book on a complex and previously hard to understand subject. The stories of how cancel culture has disrupted the lives of people across the United States were shocking and truly sad. It forced me to think about concepts like accountability and the power of the press in a whole new light. From politics to PR to families and beyond, there is something for everyone in this book.

The Cancel Culture Curse is thought-provoking and will no doubt produce a range of reactions from readers due to the fact that it covers an enormous number of topics. One thing that is enormously clear is the deep thought that went into writing this. But what sets it apart is the championing of free speech and the compelling case that people deserve second chances.

The book makes the case that cancel culture is bad for democracy and a negative force in society. It argues forcefully for democracy and appeals to people to consider treating one another with a little more understanding, forgiveness and grace.

The summaries of key points at the tail end of each chapter make it easy to absorb, and give readers the flexibility to go deep into the details or quickly gather the main ideas from each.

But this is not a book that is all doom-and-gloom. The authors prescribe ways to move past cancel culture, and tell stories of normal people who persevered and ultimately triumphed over the haters it cals "cancel vultures."

This is an important book that has arrived at a time when it is most needed. Well worth reading and sharing.

I did not actually know a lot about cancel culture before I read this book. But now I know a ton, and it's truly scary.

The book is very detailed and makes a very strong academic case for opposing the practice of cancelling people. It also gives lots of interesting examples of people who were attacked and suffered greatly from online attacks. It's truly scare how some people are willing to do and say anything online to go after others.

Some of the chapters were very long and detailed, but it never felt like it was too academic or dry. When I need to do so, I just skipped to the end of the chapter to review the key points. Great idea to add those in--I wish every book did the same.

The Cancel Culture Curse is an impressive book that definitely argues convincingly against cancel culture. I also learned how the cancel culture people are going against basic American principles by doing what they do.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn a ton about cancel culture and better understand why it's happening now. I hope that people will pay attention to this book and put its lessons to use in their lives.

The Cancel Culture Curse is both an enjoyable and informative read. Cancel culture is a crippling new-age ritual, and Nierman and Sach’s work showed through first-hand accounts of case studies and interviews how cancel culture truly affects an individual. The Cancel Culture Curse also brings to light the importance of accountability and how cancel culture acts as of form as vigilantism in the American judicial system. This a great book for anyone looking to learn a bit more about this cultural phenomenon or for those who are completely unfamiliar with the topic.

One of the sad commentaries about today's world is that we seem to have lost the art of talking with people with whom we disagree. Instead, many people are quick to anger, quick to accuse, quick to vilify, and quick to cancel.

This book makes the case that this is in conflict with the values that defined America at its founding but is nevertheless a part of today's prevailing winds. We have to do better.

The Cancel Culture Curse is filled with chapters meant to be not only a wake-up call to the dangers (cancel vultures) out there but also as a roadmap for preparing for a crisis before it happens, making a plan with crisis professionals if needed, educating and protecting our children, and refusing to be defined and canceled by nameless faceless others who derive pleasure from lashing out at people without knowledge of who they are, what the circumstances are, and what the facts are.

Even if for nothing else, the book's case studies deserve to be shared and discussed with others.

Perhaps this book can get me (and you?) to stop burying our heads in the sand and inspire us to do something to make this a gentler, kinder, stronger, just-er, world. This book is a great start and truly deserves a 5-star rating.

In this digital age, the cancel culture is running rapidly. I sought a book like this to know that some people think this "cancel culture" must stop. I appreciated the chapter on parents teaching their children the dangers of the cancel culture. Knowing that the audience for this book will be adults. If you are debating buying this book, buy it for this chapter alone. I struggle with communicating the dangers of the internet with my kids, and the tips here are helpful!

The Cancel Culture Curse by Evan Nierman and Mark Sachs is a must read for everyone. The relevant information in this book is vital to understanding cancel culture and the power of the internet. I was hooked after reading the mindset of "Post first. Think later." Each chapter ends with a summary of the authors' key points. The experiences the authors had with people who have been seriously affected by cancel culture are powerful and eye opening.
