I bought it used and even appreciated the previous owner's handwritten notes within it.
I like that the author has personally worked with oncology patients as well as having had cancer affect her own household. I also like that she takes a whole food approach. In my oncologist's waiting room, there were a number of magazine resources for eating "healthy" through cancer, but I felt that they promoted a lot of processed foods, whereas this book encourages preparing your own meals and snacks and gives many alternatives for things to make when a chemo patient doesn't really have an appetite. I am now through my chemotherapy treatment, having just had surgery and will be on to radiation therapy, but I intend to continue to make use of the recipes in this book. I really like the almond muffin recipe and the variations of it that she suggests (especially the chocolate variation)!
If you are looking for a personal resource for getting through cancer or to support a friend or family member going through cancer, I highly recommend this book!
In my opinion, a good cookbook has to have pictures that inspire you to eat and this one is full of them.
The author, Rebecca Katz, is founder of a culinary practice that specializes in meeting the specific nutritional needs of cancer patients. She has been a chef and guest lecturer at top academic medical centers throughout the country.
She offers easy solutions for side effects such as nausea, dehydration, fatigue, weight loss, and others. She describes fat, acid, salt, sweet adjustments for taste changes, as well as compassionate and sensible Strategies for Thriving during Treatment (title of chapter 2).
In this book, the author makes tough things sound doable, which I think is part of her compassion and sensible-ness.
