Manufacturer Defects - Safety concern
Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2020
This review is for a 24 Pack of Mason Canning Jars. The product arrived on Dec 2, 2020 with what appears to be severe manufacturing defects as well as quality control issues. I will break the review out to facilitate ease of reading:Shipping:Product arrived in a well sealed box as part of a collection of purchases. The canning jars were well packaged in foam inserts and packed within a cardboard box. As this product came as a combined shipment, several other items were included in the larger Amazon box (one of which was a glass honey dispenser). There was no shifting of items within the outer box when lifted, indicating that little movement could occur amongst the multiple items being shipped. The inner and outer boxes showed no sign of shipping damage. The other glass item that was part of this shipment (the honey dispenser) had no damage. Conclusion: packaging is sufficient, shipping company did not inflict damage.Product:Product consisted of a total of 24 jars in 4 oz, 8 oz, and 12 oz sizes (quantity of 8 each) along with lids, labels, marker and a wire brush. First indication that a problem existed was when an 8 oz jar was lifted from the container and I heard rattling coming from within it. Inspection of the jar revealed multiple glass shard of varying sizes within it (see above photos). Since the glass did not seem to come from that jar (no visible pieces missing), I began to search all the other jars looking for missing pieces of glass. During the inspection of the 12 oz sizes, I felt small ridges on the bottom of each of the 8 jars that appeared to be mould lines; however, they were circular and were offset in a non-traditional location for a mould line. I ran my finger across this line and felt like what seemed to be a crack. I filled a jar with water to check and it leaked immediately. Inspection of all the 4 oz jars revealed a few of them had a starburst looking chip or crack at the bottom (I did not check with water for a leak, because by this time I knew the whole shipment was going back to Amazon). I did not find any obvious signs of issues with the 8 oz jars, aside from the first one that had glass shards in it (by the way, those glass shards did not belong to any of the jars within the box - they must have been an extra bonus from the factory). Conclusion: repeated circular cracks on all the 12 oz jars indicates a manufacturing defect of some sort, multiple starburst chips on 4 oz jars indicate that at a minimum better inspection methods are needed from this manufacturer, and as far as all the extra loose glass packaged so nicely within the 8 oz jar . . . . . . that just deserves its own special prize !!!Wrap Up:Amazon was great about offering a return or refund. Since this was a Black Friday purchase, I opted to go for a replacement so I could still take advantage of the discounted price and to give the manufacturer a second chance to come through. The return box will be picked up tomorrow and sent back (thankful I don't have to go out to a shipping center). The replacement is due on Saturday. I will post about how the replacement turns out.Since these jars are typically used for food storage, I felt it important to post this review in the hopes of awareness to future potential consumers and for feedback to the manufacturer to help with their efforts for continuous improvement.
