Excellent book, needs an index

For the person who already knows photography and has previous experience with digital photography (as opposed to film) this book is a refreshing change from the usual aftermarket book on camera use. Of the four books I have on use of the Canon 70D camera, it's by far the best. It's complete, it really deals with the camera's features and how to use them ( as opposed to attempting to teach the reader how to take a picture, as so many other books do), and it offers occasional recommendation on settings. It does not try to teach you photography or digital photography as such, as other books do - and in my opinion that's a very good thing. It's lengthy and comprehensive, and it strongly encourages the reader to have the 70D in hand while reading. If you get the e-book version as I did, the small photo illustrations need a double-tap to enlarge them, a very minor thing.

The book loses 5 star status, for lack of anything resembling an index. I understand that it's very difficult to implement a real index in a digital book, since page "lengths" will vary with different settings of the e-reader. But this book cries out for an index of some sort. An alphabetized outline at the end of the book would have been a very helpful addition; such an outline could even have included the "percentage" of the book (visible in a bar graph at the bottom of the page on the e-reader I use) where features are located. Without such an index or outline, the reader can create one as he/she reads, by underlining and adding occasional notes. That's far from an ideal way to "index" a book, but it's better than nothing. Could the book be made available in PDF format, with an index? That might help a lot.

There are several guides to the new Canon EOS 70D. This is the best I've come across. That is not to say that it's great. If it were possible, I'd give it three and a half stars. The index is reasonable, the layout is accessible to a great extent, but, as in other guides, too much of the material reads like the Canon manual included with the 70D.
I've been a user of Canon's "double digit" SLRs since the 20D and the evolution of the camera has produces greater and greater capabilities. That means greater and greater complications. Since, however, many people choose the 70D as their first SLR, being sold at all kinds of places, even at Costco, a good, basic manual needs to be written. I wish this could be it, but it's not.
When guides are written by professional photographers. all too often they come up with a manual for their peers, not the entry level folks who really need a guide. Better luck next time.

Excellent book! This is a true getting to know the 70D book. It covers each aspect of the 70D along with providing setting recommendations and why. The Canon manual is pretty useless (IMO). I've gone through 50% of the book and am very impressed; it has helped me greatly with setting up my camera. I would, however, recommend that anyone getting the book (or any book for that matter), try the settings to see how you like them, i.e. do they fit your style.

The 'menu' settings are pretty much at the beginning of the book with references to 'more' in later chapters - that is the only drawback. If there was a reference to more detail later on - I skipped that part until I got to the chapter with the 'more detail'.

Some books (like one for my Canon 60D) try to teach photography. This one hasn't. It does have good tips and recommendations that, if you're not doing them already, may require some adjusting.

I like the book and would definitely recommend it to someone else getting a Canon 70D.

I'm not a beginning photographer but am new to the "prosumer" DSLR equipment. I've use Canon EOS before but they were 630 and 620 bodies. A while back! The features and customization on this camera was a bit daunting for me and this book brought everything to "into focus" very quickly. Some ideas are basic that I skipped over but certainly needed for those new to a machine more complex than your standard point and shoot. I really like the writing style and the orderly way features and options are presented. I have marked sections that I will need to reread when I get more accustomed to the machine so I can go back and really customize the camera to my style and desires. I will probably reread the whole book in six months or so to better pick up on some of the things that didn't sink in the first time. I think this Kindle (HD Fire for me) edition works well and is easy to read.

Needless to say, would recommend to anyone.

Excellent Book for Camera Setup and Use

This book is very clearly written and focuses on actual operation of the camera. Unlike some camera books of this type, the author does not spend much time teaching photography but rather focuses on each individual operation and menu. The large number of menus in the Canon 70D can be very confusing with many choices in each menu and submenu. The author walks you through each one in detail and make suggestions about the best selection to make in each menu item depending on your planned use of the camera. Once the camera is completely set up, this book makes an excellent reference when you need to change settings for unusual photographic situations. I would recommend this book highly not only to beginners in digital photography but also to experienced users moving up to this somewhat complex but excellent camera.

Of course I have the camera manual - all the technical stuff & that's great, but if you want a great book that really goes into detail, this is the one to get. Unfortunately it is not available in hard copy, but that's the only downside. Mr. Klostermann goes through the camera very well with suggestions for settings & why. The camera is still fairly new to me & this book has been a lifesaver to figure out some of the very advanced features. I also have a good field guide for the Canon 70D - but not nearly as helpful as this one. I would recommend it to anyone purchasing the Canon 70D - invaluable!

I'm pretty good with instructions (OK, so I read them from cover to cover before I even get started with using a product; I'm odd, I know) but having a new camera with an instruction manual that was quite comprehensive by today's 'read it on the CD' standards just didn't cut if for my Canon 70D. Sorry, Canon, either I'm getting slow in my old age, or your technical authors aren't quite as good as they used to be.

Enter Douglas Klostermann and his brilliant user guide. It's so easy to read, to understand, and to put into practice resulting in my using the features of my camera much more fully than I might have done otherwise. In fact it was so good that I dashed right off to see if he had written something similar for a Canon bridge camera that a friend has as I wanted to get it for her as a gift.

I read through it first very quickly to see what it was all about and then with camera in hand I followed through the pages and instructions etc . I have found it clear and well written sometimes it seems a bit overwhelming in parts but I can go back and re read what I found a bit hard to grasp .It has helped me get to know my Canon 70D ( very different than the 700D) and I can learn at my own pace and it is even better buying it on Kindle,I can take it everywhere with me,well recommended .
