I bought this scanner because I have many 20-25 year old slides I'd like to scan then throw away to reduce clutter. It was simple to set up and the results are better than I expected. Photos work much better than my HP 4 in 1. It will also scan negatives, though not quite as well as slides.

It was hard to find a scanner that would scan slides and work on a Mac. This does both very well.

I bought this scanner to archive hundreds of old family photographs. It has lived up to every expectation. The quality of the reproductions is incredible. Fortunately I am retired and have plenty of time for this project as 11 seconds is very slow with the volume I have to record. That is the only drawback and of little consequence to me. Some of the albums are 100 years old and crumbling so I take more time being careful with them than the 11 second scan.

Just received it today and spent several hours with it. I am replacing an old $600 HP scanner with this and am very happy with the improvement so far.
I am using a dual boot XP 32bit / Vista 64bit configuration with 3.1gig amd x2 cpu and 4gig ram.So far it works perfectly under Vista 64bit. I downloaded the appropriate drivers and software and did not use the CD. Canon warns that it may not work with another USB cable, I tried a 6ft Belkin and it worked fine. The HP would not work with anything other than the short one they sent. The software and the front panel buttons work with no problems. I've had little problem learning the software without using the manual which is a good indication of how easy it is if you've some experience already. It scans negatives far better than the HP ever did. The photo scans are far better also. I like the software touch ups so far, but need a lot more time with it to have a final thought there. Thia scanner is far far better than the HP. I have a Cannon printer and have had no need to call their customer support so far. When I tried to get updated drivers for the Hp scanner, I and many others were told that they would not support Vista at all. Considering the $600+ cost of the scanner and the large number of them still in use, I feel that this shows the sorry state of HP's customer support. That is why I have gone over to Canon for both my printer and scanner. I'll not buy anything HP ever again.

I'm not going to go into great detail regarding the quality of the scans. A quick perusal of previous reviews will tell you that the quality is very good overall. Setup was a snap on my Win7 system but the lack of Linux drivers from Canon is a disappointment. I'm using the scanner with my laptop instead of my more powerful Ubuntu desktop because of this.

I bought this scanner mainly so I could scan the slides and negatives I have buried in my closet. It's certainly up to the task although it's a little on the slow side. The higher the resolution you scan at, the longer it takes. One four-picture strip of 35mm negative took 11 minutes to scan at 2400 dpi. The same strip took four minutes at 1200 dpi. I haven't tested the other resolutions but you get the idea. Better quality is going to take time.

After reading the other reviews, I dismissed the comments about the fragile film holder. I shouldn't have. It is indeed very dainty and can be easily damaged. I can't believe this is the best Canon can do. The least they could have done is include a second film holder or make them available for purchase here on Amazon. They can't be very expensive to produce. On the plus side, the layout of the film holder is well thought out and has illustrations on it to show you how to orient your negatives and slides.

My biggest gripe is about the false ad copy in the product listing. In two separate places, the description states that "To reduce the number of wires in your work area, one simple cable provides power and a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection." This simply is not true. The unit comes with two cables - a power cable and a USB cable. While this isn't a deal breaker, I sure hate being lied to.

I was nervous buying this to scan 750 plus slides. There is a cover on the inside lid, which has to be removed in order to scan slides. The instructions mention nothing about this, and I had to call customer service. The scan quality at 4800 dpi is very good, and it seemed to be very accurate in colour and tone. Most of the commercial slide scanning services will scan only up to about 600 dpi, and I would like to have the option for a high resolution print, so I scanned each slide at the highest setting. This took several weeks. However, after 30 scans or so, it would fill up the memory and I would have to quit the application and restart it losing the recent scans and having to rescan. So, I would scan about 28, save them, quit the app, restart it, and do 28 more. However, about 28 is all I could do per day, because the repetition and waiting drove me nuts. I would find other things to do for 20 minutes and return to scan more, often losing track of time and what I was doing. But it saved me a lot of money over professional scanning services at 50 cents to a dollar per slide.

The photo scanning is okay. A lot of retouching was needed as there was a shine on the original photo, and a lot of flaws/scratches/lint with the slides. I'm not sure what was dust on the glass bed and what wasn't. iphoto will take the flaws out, and I won't want to print each photo anyway, but will touch up on an individual basis. I haven't tried the negative scanning option yet, and I'm not sure what to expect. Overall, it worked fine, and I achieved what I wanted.
