Product Description

Product Description

Despite the large maximum aperture, the lens remains compact. Lens group 5 moves for rear focusing, and sharp, crisp pictures are obtained at all apertures. The background blur is ideal for portraits. The USM autofocuses the lens quickly and quietly. Filter size: 58 mm, Closest Focusing Distance: 3 feet.

From the Manufacturer

Another option in high-speed moderate telephotos, this compact lens is ideal for portraits and low-light work. Compared to the 85mm f/1.8 USM lens, it provides that little bit extra of telephoto power sometimes necessary outdoors or for candid shooting. Like the 85mm, itís super-sharp (even wide-open), and has fast USM autofocus along with full-time manual focusing.

A medium telephoto lens with a large aperture brings the subject closer, creates excellent background blur, gives a longer flash range, and affords a faster shutter speed to freeze the action. A standard zoom lens, with its natural angle of view and perspective, captures the subject plainly, with no special effects. However, you can use standard lenses in creative ways by varying the subject distance, aperture, and angle.

If you are looking for high quality images, especially on a budget, you cannot lose with this lens. It is my "GO TO" lens for studio portraiture, and when compared to other lenses I've tried, this one captures a TON of detailed resolution with great color rendition. Outside it's great to, super sharp, and in certain shots it can give your pictures that 3D look that everyone covets. Auto focus is ALWAYS spot on, almost never misses a shot, and it's quick too. Chromatic aberration is there at f2, but not as bad as the 85 1.8, and it's easily removed in Lightroom or Photoshop. Bokeh is nice and creamy, and at f2 you get a lot of it at 100mm, more than the 85 @ 1.8 due to the longer focal length.

The only negative thing I can say about it is the minimum focus distance, close to 3 ft, it's no macro lens for sure. However, at least it's not the 5 feet or so of the 70-200. I've owned two of these lenses, and used them both on the full frame 5D2, so I cannot speak to the APC crowd. At full frame it's obviously a bit tight using this indoors, and for APC it would pretty much not be something you would use indoors, except for portraits.

As a side-note, the first one of these I owned was in TERRIBLE condition. It was scratched, and there was so much dirt and dust in the lens I actually laughed out loud in disbelief. Looked like someone dropped it in the sand and rolled it around for an hour or two. BUT, and this is a big but, it did not affect the image quality in the least. Not at all. So if you're on the fence, worrying about buying used lenses and having reduced image quality, don't. I'ts not an issue. The only reason I got rid of that first one was because the manual focus ring was full of grit and could barely turn. But I'll never get rid of this second one. : )

I'm an amateur user so my five star rating is based on the lens doing what I needed it to do and at a fair price, which is give me well-focused and exposed action shots of my daughters' volleyball games in difficult indoor lighting using my Canon T3i. The gyms tend to be small to medium in size, so the 70-200 2.0 which is the go-to for sports photography would have been overkill, and too expensive for my purpose. After seeing some recommendations of this and the 85 mm f 2.0 as a suitable low-cost substitute for indoor sports in some conditions, I decided to give it a try. Works great - fast focus and the f. 2.0 is what I need in the cave lighting the games are played in. The focal length enables me to get most of the shots I want while shooting from the sidelines in fairly small gyms - this is not the solution for shooting from the stands in larger facilities. I switch to a 35mm f2 when I want a wider field of view. And on top of solving my volleyball problem I have a very nice portrait lens on top of that.

I think this is a great lens, especially if you are looking to use it for portraiture, where this lens really shines on a full frame camera. I will probably be in the minority here, but when I got my 5D MIII, I purchased this lens along with the Canon 135mm F/2L for a side to side comparison. While the 135m is a fine piece of glass (and heavy at that) and produced some very pleasing photos, I did not think the photo quality that the 135mm showed over the 100mm F/2 justified the $550 premium the 135mm costs over the 100mm. I also did not like how long the 135mm was, I have zooms that covered that range.

The pictures that I have taken with the 100mm F/2 have absolutely shined for me, the lens has a snappy focus (not as fast as the 135MM F/2L), but very capable of keeping up with my active 2 ½ year old both in and outdoors.

My current trinity of prime lenses is the Canon 35mm F/2, Canon 50mm F/1.4 and this the Canon 100 F/2. If you have a 50mm lens on a full frame, I think the more logical portrait prime to supplement the 50mm is the 100mm over the Canon 85mm F/1.8. As both lenses offer identical build quality of the 100mm F/2 and the added reach of the 100mm over the 85mm is a small but added bonus.

Hope this write up helps you out.

I love this lens. I'd previously tried a friend's and was quite impressed with the sharpness from f2.2/2.5 onward, and the bokeh around f2.8/3.2. Upon purchasing the lens, I was overjoyed to discover both better sharpness (impressive wide open and just great by 2.2/2.5 in most circumstances) and smoother bokeh. I've also done some comparing of my lens with an 85mm f/1.8 that I used to own and I'm quite a bit more impressed with the CA performance at wide apertures with the 100mm than with the 85mm: at f/2, CA is present in high contrast situations, but not nearly as bad as with my 85mm; by f/2.5-2.8, the CA is already greatly reduced; and, by f/3.2-4, it's nearly absent. For a non-L, the contrast and color are great, as well. For the cost, size, and capability, I have yet to use a more impressive prime!

I like to occasionally shoot pics of people and did have the 135 f2 L lens. Very heavy when mounted on my 5DM2. I wanted something lighter in weight. This lens, while light weight, is surprisingly sharp and well made. Wide open (which is how I like to shoot) this lens has very nice blur (bokeh) yet your subject will be sharply in focus. This lens does not come with a lens hood/shade. I bought a non-Canon hood/shade for about 1/3 the price of the Canon model (from Cowboy Studios here on Amazon) and it fit perfectly. If one is looking for a well made, well priced short tele lens for Canon, then I highly recommend this lens.

Excellent lens for the price. Fast AF and sharp all the way open at f/2. Doesn't have the image quality or AF speed of an L lens, but at a third of the price (compared to the 135 f/2L) you get one awesome prime lens. Doesn't come with a hood. I strongly recommend getting one.
