From the Manufacturer

Super Telephoto Lens

Featuring Fluorite optics that deliver sharper images with less chromatic aberration, the new large-diameter EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM super telephoto lens also takes advantage of magnesium and titanium construction for a lighter weight and a Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum. Because image stabilization technology in super telephoto lenses may inadvertently over-compensate and interfere with composing and framing distant or moving subjects, the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM includes an advanced third Image Stabilization mode (Mode 3) that activates IS only when the shutter button is fully pressed. This allows users to pan fast-moving subjects and then activate IS only when it is precisely required. Because all three IS modes give the equivalent effect of up to four extra stops of performance, and because plus the Power Focus mode enables smooth focus change when shooting video, the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM is ideal for capturing rapid-fire action. Other improvements such as better dust- and waterproofing make the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM super telephoto lens an ultra high-performance Digital Age tool combining Canon hallmarks of superb ease-of-use with excellent durability.

The battle goes on, Canon vs Nikon. The latter has had an edge in camera bodies in the past few years (although Canon I think ups the ante quite a bit with the 1DX), but Canon has always been the leader when it came to super telephoto lenses. Now with their second generation models the gap has widened, IMO.

I owned the 500 f4 MkI earlier and it was quite a lens, heavy, bulky, and with the neoprene camo cover from Lenscoat, it certainly looked like a piece of artillery. The 600 f4 MkI was an even bigger beast, almost impossible to handhold while shooting.

Now comes the new MkII version of the 600 and it blows away not only Nikon, but the older lenses from Canon's own stable. First, it weighs almost the same as the old 500, which is amazing in itself. Second, it is super sharp even at f4 (most pros will tell you that to get the best out of these big mamas, you need to close down at least to f4.5). Third, the IS works even better. Fourth, the hood cover is a neoprene vesion, removable with one hand and much lighter too.

The biggest problem with this lens of course is the price and the general shortage of availability. For those who do wildlife and birding, it is the best thing currently, with a 1.4X it matches the 800 f5.6 easily.

I'm a wildlife & nature photographer with a focus on bird photography. I've owned and used other super teles in the Canon L series and find the 600 to be the near perfect telephoto lens for bird photography. I expected excellent performance considering it is the pinnacle of Canon lens design and build quality. The lens exceeded my expectations! Very accurate and lightning fast autofocus, fantastic image quality, jaw dropping good four stop IS.

In terms of size and weight, yes it is a large lens but I find it manageable when carried in the Tamrac Super Tele backpack, I can carry around five miles before noticing the weight.

If you require this type of reach and aren't daunted by the high price of admission make this your next photography purchase. Very highly recommended.

I use this lens for birds in flight photography, hand held. It works great. I use it with a Canon 5D mk3 and/or a Canon 7D body. 75% of the time I have a Canon 1.4x III extender on the lens and it works great, fast focus, high IQ. The weight of the lens is not bad for hand held shots. Excellent lens, glad I purchased it on Amazon.

I've never owned a lens whose sharpest aperture was wide open! This is the first time I've spent $13k on a lens. Of course, the image quality from this lens is at a whole different level. Autofocus speed is super quick. This lens is definitely going to improve my birding and wildfire pics. This is my first super-telephoto lens, so I am still in the process of purchasing the necessary accessories; gimbal head, backpacks, security locks, and maybe an upgraded tripod. I am also having to raise my shooting technique to a whole other level, shooting at 600mm and beyond shows every mistake.

Oh yeah baby - had been drooling over and wanting one of these for years. No regrets. Manageable to use as hand held, but long term can be fatiguing. I bought a monopod for it, as well as a blank internal filter housing. I do not like shooting through filters to get a more crystal sharp image. The fewer pieces of glass you can shoot through, the better the image clarity. The filter holder it comes with seems to be a non-removable clear filter for whatever reason.
