From the Manufacturer
Super Telephoto Lens
Featuring Fluorite optics that deliver sharper images with less chromatic aberration, the new large-diameter EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM super telephoto lens also takes advantage of magnesium and titanium construction for a lighter weight and a Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum. Because image stabilization technology in super telephoto lenses may inadvertently over-compensate and interfere with composing and framing distant or moving subjects, the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM includes an advanced third Image Stabilization mode (Mode 3) that activates IS only when the shutter button is fully pressed. This allows users to pan fast-moving subjects and then activate IS only when it is precisely required. Because all three IS modes give the equivalent effect of up to four extra stops of performance, and because plus the Power Focus mode enables smooth focus change when shooting video, the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM is ideal for capturing rapid-fire action. Other improvements such as better dust- and waterproofing make the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM super telephoto lens an ultra high-performance Digital Age tool combining Canon hallmarks of superb ease-of-use with excellent durability.

Top customer reviews
I owned the 500 f4 MkI earlier and it was quite a lens, heavy, bulky, and with the neoprene camo cover from Lenscoat, it certainly looked like a piece of artillery. The 600 f4 MkI was an even bigger beast, almost impossible to handhold while shooting.
Now comes the new MkII version of the 600 and it blows away not only Nikon, but the older lenses from Canon's own stable. First, it weighs almost the same as the old 500, which is amazing in itself. Second, it is super sharp even at f4 (most pros will tell you that to get the best out of these big mamas, you need to close down at least to f4.5). Third, the IS works even better. Fourth, the hood cover is a neoprene vesion, removable with one hand and much lighter too.
The biggest problem with this lens of course is the price and the general shortage of availability. For those who do wildlife and birding, it is the best thing currently, with a 1.4X it matches the 800 f5.6 easily.
In terms of size and weight, yes it is a large lens but I find it manageable when carried in the Tamrac Super Tele backpack, I can carry around five miles before noticing the weight.
If you require this type of reach and aren't daunted by the high price of admission make this your next photography purchase. Very highly recommended.
As you can see in the picture, I have no problem carrying this lens since I've been drinking Tuscan Whole Milk by the gallon which made me stronger within the 1st week of drinking it. I mean, I don't get it when wimpy folks complain about the weight of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L Lens.
Other photographers know that I mean serious business when I walk around this lens, especially when I wear it on super special days with The Mountain Three Wolf Moon Short Sleeve Tee. I mean, I just command respect wherever I go with that thing and my t-shirt. I even had a cop escort me to the front of a line of a sporting event because they thought I was with ESPN or NASA. People always ask me, how much does it zoom. I just laugh in their face.
I was going to take some pictures of some brick walls or newspapers to show how sharp it is. Let's just say this thing is sharper than a Ginzu knife.
Little birds from far away look like pterodactyls.
Makes searching for alien bases on the moon easier.
Makes anyone a better photographer.
I cancelled my gym membership because I lift this every day.
Only f4 instead of f2.8
Doesn't come with front UV filter.
You need to be strong like me.
Suffice it to say, this this can juice blueberries, oranges, hey, it can even juice a piece of beef jerky! My little mistake may have cost a hundredfold in price, but it has made up for this in spades by saving trips to Jamba!!!
