Top customer reviews
The bad news is if you are expecting the technology of a higher end machine from this $30 printer then yes you will be disappointed but if you are looking for a product that will just handle your simple print/scan jobs then you will be pleased.
On the bright side if you are having trouble with installation, the customer service was made up of folks who actually know the products they represent.
Right out of the box we removed a couple of pieces of tape, put in the 2 cartridges provided and it copied to color & b/w perfectly. My 11 year old son read and followed all of the directions with me looking on.
It prints a LOT faster than I thought it would and it's not very loud. Sometimes it does pull 2 or 3 sheets of paper in instead of 1, but they just come out as a bundle and I have 2 blanks to pull out. (It's also incredibly humid in this dorm room this summer!)
I have a MacBook Air and the online setup worked quick & easy.
I just scanned a copy of technical music staff theory assignment to email to my Professor and it came out perfectly, so no complaints there. I was worried because of all of the 5-line music staff it might come out funky, but looks perfect. YAY!
I set it for draft printing if I just need to print off articles and that saves on ink. I have printed around 50 pages on the regular setting and 150 pages on draft and it's still going strong after using it for one week. Some pages had color and they came out nicely. I did order an extra black and extra color (for $28 total) just in case. I also think I could figure out how to do double-sided by printing the odds and then flipping the paper and doing the evens, but I am not there yet. =)
So far, for $29 into it (plus the $28 for ink I haven't used yet) I have not had to deal with printing at the library or dealing with computer lab hours, it is tiny and works, so I am very happy. Certainly not as fancy as my Brother MFC I have at home, but it gets the job done for a 1/5 of the price.
Update 7/2/14: I didn't use this printer for about two months, and, thus, had concerns when I started using it again. Namely, would the ink heads be dried up from lack of use? No. There were no problems when I started using it again. It printed perfect looking sheets with no delays.
I had three printers that all needed ink--a great Canon photo printer, a good Canon everyday printer and a good Epson photo printer. To replace the ink in each printer would cost between $50-$75 each, depending on the printer. Since I no longer print photos, I just needed a printer to print mailing labels, coupons and such. A major well known department store currently has this printer for $29.99 online. It was also in the store, but the clerk said they sold no Canon printer that cheap. She was told to check online, which she did, and then went and got one in the back. It was cheaper to buy this printer than replace the ink in the other printers. It does not come with a printer cord, however, but I had plenty of those. It does come with both the Canon PG-245 Black Cartridge FINE Ink Cartridge &Canon CL-246 Color Cartridge Fine Ink Cartridge ink cartridges. And you have the choice of printing in black or color, regardless of if you are printing from online or scanning from the machine.
Setting up the printer was simple with Vista, even though I could not download the drivers from the disk. (On the box, it says the printer can be used with Windows XP to Windows 8 and Mac OS X v10.6.8.) That is a problem with my computer that I've had since reinstalling Vista last year. Security Pack 1 is there, but it is often not recognized, so the Canon software said it could not download without it. But as soon as I plugged the printer into a USB port on my PC, Vista found all the drivers online and installed them. Next, I had a problem with the PC recognizing the printer was not printing, even though it showed the printer was ready. First, I had to make sure it was the new Canon printer the material was being sent to, not the Epson, which wasn't even hooked up to the PC. Also, I was using a 25 ft. printer cord I got years ago, which worked at the time, but possibly was the problem this time. I once read some place that a printer might not work right if the cord was too long. Thus, I'm using a 3 ft. one now. Also, for some reason, after installing the ink cartridges, I could find no messages about aligning the printer but did it anyway, going to the maintenace box for the printer. That lack of message may once again have been caused by not having dowloaded the software from the disk.
If all of this sounds like the printer is a headache to setup, it is not. I resolved everything fairly quickly, and most everyone who buys this will be able to use the disk to setup. This printer is loud but quick. The data prints look fine, as did a photo I printed out on normal printing paper. I personally would not get this printer to do photos, however, but others may think it's fine. It is very lightweight and cheaply made, compared to my other Canon printers. But for $30, it was a deal. The black ink cartridge currently cost $18.50 and the color $22 here at Amazon. So, if this printer is still being sold at the same price at that department store when the ink runs out, it would be cheaper to just buy another printer. There's something very wrong with the price of printer ink! Probably the best thing to do is to print only in black, but do a color print once a week to keep the color cartridge from drying out.
Update 12/13: I have discovered this printer is absolutely terrific for printing letters and envelopes. Using Microsoft Works Word Processor, I typed up a letter last night, hit the print button, and it shot out of the Canon printer in like one second! Next, I did a #10 envelope using Word, and that printed up perfectly in a second or two, too. This is the only printer I have ever used that did not have problems printing an envelope. I've had printers where it was harder than hard to determine how to arrange the envelope, and printers that left the envelope smudged with ink. Not this one. Just place the envelope face up, with the bottom against the right side of the printer, and move the page holder lever to hold the envelope tight.
