The Power to Capture Stunning Movies and Photographs
24.2 Megapixel Sensor
The EOS M3 features a 24.2 Megapixel (APS-C) sensor capable of capturing large image and movie files. At 24.2 Megapixels, the EOS M's sensor delivers images suitable for enlargements with sufficient resolution for significant trimming. Whether making poster-sized prints, zooming in on a particular detail or making Full HD movies, the EOS M3's sensor is primed to deliver. An ISO range of 100–12800 (expandable to 25600) means images can be captured with low noise and high detail, even in dimly lit situations.
DIGIC 6 Image Processor
Complementing the EOS M3's CMOS sensor, Canon's DIGIC 6 Image Processor not only speeds up camera operations, but also helps enhance a number of the camera's advanced features. The DIGIC processor aids the camera's sensor in capturing detailed images with reduced noise at high ISOs and enables high-quality movie capture with a number of different movie compressions including MP4. On top of that, it enhances the camera's Dynamic Image Stabilization system and even helps improve the AF system's face detection accuracy.
Consistent, Spot-on AF
A fusion of AF technologies designed to quickly achieve and maintain AF, the EOS M3's Hybrid CMOS AF III system is impressively fast, delivering comprehensive and accurate AF coverage over approximately 80% (vertical) and 70% (horizontal) of the entire image. With an optimized phase difference AF sensor built into the EOS M3's CMOS sensor's individual pixels, along with a secondary contrast detection system, the EOS M3's focus system is equipped to focus quickly and accurately in many situations.
Fast, Intuitive Controls
Capable of creating superb stills and movies automatically, the EOS M3 offers a number of control options for speedy manual operation. The camera features a Front Dial that's placed directly around the shutter button and is complemented by a dedicated Exposure Compensation Dial positioned within easy reach of the camera's thumb grip. In addition, the EOS M3 has numerous custom functions, including user-programmable shortcuts, customizable buttons and much, much more. It's comfortable to hold, with a fluid and ergonomic design that's familiar to EOS users.
More Operations at Your Fingertips
3.0” Tilt-type LCD Monitor
The EOS M3 has a large, high-resolution, 3.0” LCD monitor that tilts up 180° and down 45°, ideal for composing not only self portraits, but also for taking pictures at high and low angles with ease.
Intuitive Touch Screen for Selfies and Easy Menu Navigation
The EOS M3's touch screen is not just for defining AF points and for selfies! Designed to be accessible without hindering access to the lens and shutter button, the EOS M3's touch screen is fast and easy to use for many operations. With a Quick Control screen like those found on other EOS cameras and a number of functions superimposed over the image in a “U” pattern, settings are easily accessible without taking a finger away from the shutter or altering your grip on the camera. It's easy to change the camera's settings while maintaining the ability to quickly take a picture.
EOS Compatibility for Creative Control
While a number of lenses and accessories are designed specifically for the EOS M series, the EOS M3 is also fully compatible with over 70 of Canon's EF* and EF-S* Lenses plus other EOS accessories like Speedlites, Speedlite Transmitters and even Macro Ring Lites. Whether the EOS M3 is a primary or secondary camera, it boasts smooth compatibility with a wide range of EOS accessories.
* Mount Adapter EF-EOS M is required.
External Accessories for Advanced Operation
Electronic Viewfinder (EVF-DC1)
In addition to its compatibility with EOS accessories and Speedlites, the EOS M3 is compatible with Canon's high-resolution Electronic Viewfinder EVF-DC1. Easily attached to the camera's hot shoe, the 2.36 Megapixel EVF-DC1 can tilt up 90°, and for photographers who wish to hold the camera up to their eye, it helps the EOS M3 deliver operation and feel similar to that of an SLR. Especially helpful in bright sunlight, or in situations where composing on the screen is not convenient, the EVF-DC1 can be an indispensible accessory for the EOS M3.
External Microphone Jack
For expanded operations including Full HD movie recording, the EOS M3 features not only a built-in stereo microphone but also an external microphone jack that adds a level of versatility and convenience for moviemaking.
Superb Moviemaking Made Easy

Let me start with a list of pros and cons of the m3 kit with 18-55mm kit lens.
+Dedicated EV dial
+Grippy handgrip area
+No Moire (great digital processing)
-Finicky Menu layout
-Buffer fills up fast when shooting RAW, I can get ~4 shots before I need to wait for the card to write. with a SanDisk Extreme PRO SDSDXPA-064G-X46 SDXC Flash Memory Card with up to 95MB/s
-Chromatic Aberrations everywhere past .5 (half the distance from the center of the lens to the edge of the lens) even stopped down
-Slightly soft wide open
In good lighting It is similar to a modern prosumer slr like the 5D maybe slightly faster. With the kit lens in auto mode it always stays focused wherever I point it, very snappy.
With other full size Canon EF lenses it can hunt a bit in auto mode to the point where you want to turn off auto mode and put it into focus on demand mode where you half press the shutter button like any slr. It has a bit more trouble with telephoto lenses, and slower consumer lenses. It slows down slightly indoors but is still of slr speed. Indoors it really needs the infrared focus assist light to be quick, but you have the option to turn off that front red light.
Let's approach this realistically... Is this camera going to beat a top end slr? Is this lens going to give a $2000 lens a run for it's money? No.
That all being said, this is an excellent kit for anyone from your pro photog who wants a walk-around body, to a family going on vacation. For it's size and price it's a must buy! Some of the greatest photos were not taken on the best equipment, they were taken on small portable cameras. There's a great adage we pros used to use in the film days: " f/8 and be there!" Meaning being present for the event is 90% of the photo. This is just like owning a DSLR body in a tiny frame. Great unobtrusive camera. And with the adapter to attach your canon lenses and speedlites this camera has some serious guts to backup your kit in a pinch.
If you want a camera for family or vacation this is the one to get to have amazing pictures! Just set it to full auto and its all the point and shoot you would ever need!
My first experience with mirrorless cameras was with the Olympus OM-D E-M10. That is a great little camera, but I found the IQ - while very good - to not measure up to the Canon M3 and the Fujifilm line of mirrorless cameras and I decided not to try the higher end 4/3 cameras. I've been very impressed by the IQ of the Canon M3, including at high ISO values. I've tried several of the EF-M lenses and have been impressed with their quality as well (including the 18-55mm kit lens). I've also tried the adapter with some of the smaller Canon lenses and have been impressed with the quick focus and image quality.
This camera won't replace my DSLR (and maybe I'll have enough money someday to move up to one of the 5D's), but the size and weight are fantastic for the images I've seen so far. I've also bought the Fuji X-Pro2 and am very impressed, but I see it as more of an alternative to DSLRs given its size and the size and weight of some of its lenses. Don't get me wrong, I love the X-Pro2 and already have some great images from it, but it can't beat the M3 for size.
I've included a shot of Johnson grass to show how well the camera focused on the grass that the wind was blowing all over the place against a busy background; a shot of some horses that I took from my truck and that I took quickly as I pulled to the side of the road because I wasn't sure when another vehicle might come along; and a shot of a sunset sky to show how well the camera performed at higher ISOs (in this case 2500). I've also included two photos showing the size comparison between the M3 with the adapter and an EF 40mm pancake lens compared to the Canon 6D with the 24-70mm f/2.8 II and to the Fuji X-Pro2 with the 16mm f/1.4 WR.
The M3 isn't a "pocket camera", but it's about as small as you're going to get and still be able to change lenses and control aperture, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, etc. I carry this camera or the Fuji (or sometimes both) with me just about all the time. It fits nicely in the center console of my truck when I have to leave it behind. I've found the best bag for this camera and two or three lenses and accessories to be Think Tank's Urban Approach 5. I initially thought I'd miss the view-finder, but it really hasn't been a big problem so far. I might still buy one, but it'll sort of defeat my purpose for this system - which is small and light and great IQ. A definite five stars for a very compact mirrorless camera.
Like the original, you can use all your EOS lenses with an adapter, as well as the small number of lenses designed especially for this format.
I have a Canon G7x that performs very well, but the larger sensor of the EOS M3 have displaced it for many purposes.
I think this camera is better than many of the reviewers have said.
If you're a Canon user, and are looking for something in between a full frame model and a carry-everywhere, pocket-sized camera, you should definitely consider the M3.
After using my wife's M3 I found that I really like the compact size. I've always liked Canon's color on their digital cameras so I replaced my big heavy DSLR kit with the M3.
