The EOS R combines a redeveloped lens mount and an updated full-frame image sensor for a unique and sophisticated multimedia camera system. Revolving around the new RF lens mount, the EOS R was created to be the means to make the most of a new series of lenses and optical technologies.

- the new RF lenses seems a step ahead in usability, functions and performance
- the control ring is clearly a great addition. The adapter with the control is almost indispensable if you start shooting with the EOS R and EF lenses
- portability - size, weight and ergonomics - are excellent. Had to familiarize a little to the new button layout and slightly modify the grip, but overall feeling and maneuverability really great
- Had some initial troubles configuring bluetooth connectivity to enable GPS, but all sorted out. I consider GPS coordinates to be an integral part of a photo experience
- shot 700+ RAW photos in roughly 3 hrs, and drained the entire battery. Lesson learned: will always keep a spare one with me
- need to familiarize with the focus system, but setting the Multi-Function bar to round robin all AF modes seem logical, natural and a no brainer after few minutes
After some months I can confirm the first impression. Actually, from an ergonomic perspective I find the EOS R superlative, and the multi function bar extremely useful and an integral part of the overall experience. Looking forward for more RF lenses in the second half of 2019.
I normally shoot with a Canon 5D mark iv and the Canon 1 D X mark II. I now consider the EOS R my first choice for travels, landscape, urban architecture and portraits.
Here are the things I like:
-Great picture quality
-Works with my 24-70 f2.8 II, 70-200 f2.8IS II and other lenses without a problem with the adapter.
-Single point single shot Autofocus works great.
-MOST of the time face detection with Eye detection works.
-Ring on the adapter(Sold separately), I have set ut up for Aperture, I really like this even though the ring is a bit to close to the camera.
-The FV mode is probably my favorite new feature.
-Great battery life, not sure how they measure the battery life for the specs, but I am getting an average of 900 photos per charge.
-Touch Screen as good as the 5d iv
Things that I need to get used to
-Touch and Drag autofocus
-Multi-function bar, I have programmed it to ISO, left side ISO 100, right side ISO 3,600, it works.
Things that need improvement:
-Face Autofocus, it works great 90% of the time, but sometimes just decides that the hands or a chair are the face.
-The touch and drag autofocus can be more responsive, meaning when I touch the screen while looking through the viewfinder the to change the focus point sometimes I need to swipe a few times to get to the point I want. I have tested different options, like mapping the screen to 1/4, to 1/2 to absolute and relative. It works but not as good as it could!
-Bursts silent shooter.
-More options to customize the buttons. For example, I would like to not only program the back button for Back Button Focus but to go to specify what type of autofocus (single/servo, single point or different areas, etc...)
In conclusion, I am very happy with the EOS R and know that when Canon releases a firmware upgrade I will be really really happy with the camera!
After a few months of using this I found out that the silent shutter works in certain circumstances but if you are going to use your camera to photograph in events that use LED lights or indoors under LED lights be aware that you will get terrible banding, basically useless.
-Seeing the exposure before taking the shot!
-Able to keep my Canon (and Sigma) EF lenses with the same performance
-Noticeably smaller and lighter body
-Convenient access to photos over built-in WiFi
-Handy Canon app also doubles as a remote shutter
-Flip-out LCD great for composing selfies with the family
-Touch subject on LCD to focus+shoot is nifty
-sensor cover when changing lenses helps reduce dust
-Custom settings for the control buttons to fit your style
-A bit of lag to see the images after the shot
-Cropped 4K video
See the included unedited test shots for samples.
Glad I made the switch!
