From the Manufacturer
From the Manufacturer This networkable 5-in-1 is all business, able to quickly produce beautiful photos and bold, professional-quality text. You can print photos right from compatible memory cards; selecting and enhancing images on the 1.8 inch color LCD display - or directly from a digital camera or DV camcorder. The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) holds up to 30 originals, and two paper trays can store both plain and photo paper. You'll achieve up to Super G3 fax speed in color and B&W, and the expanded memory can store 40 speed dial codes and receive 100 incoming pages. Copies will be remarkably true to the originals, and when scanning photos you'll produce impressive 2400-dpi results, with vibrant 48-bit color depth.
To achieve 4800 x 1200 color dpi resolution, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a patented print head with 1,600 precision nozzles, ejecting ink droplets as small as 2 picoliters. The result: Amazing images.
Four High-Performance Ink Tanks
This All-in-One uses four high-intensity dye-based color inks for rich photos and graphics, and a pigment black ink for clear, laser-quality text. Replace only the color that runs out, rather than a multi-color tank containing unused ink, helping to reduce your print costs.
For extra productivity in the home or small office, you'll be able to produce up to 30 ppm black / up to 20 ppm color. You can also print a superb 4 x 6 inch borderless print in only about 46 seconds.
Automatic Document Feeder
The built-in Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) holds up to 30 originals, so it's faster and easier to copy, scan or fax your larger documents.
Auto Image Fix
The built-in Auto Image Fix feature helps you produce amazing results on all your photos. First, it categorizes your images into one of five types - Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery, Snapshot with Scenery, and Snapshot with Night Scenery - then applies optimal image correction accordingly. For example, it will automatically brighten faces that are backlit and underexposed, and correct color cast to help ensure more accurate skin tones.
Two Paper Trays
Two built-in paper trays let you store photo paper and plain paper of different sizes - so you're always ready to print.
View, Edit and Enhance Images
With the 1.8 inchLCD screen you can view images on a compatible memory card without having to download them to your computer, then enhance them before printing.
An Ethernet interface lets you connect to a home or office network, with connected computers sharing the use of this versatile machine.
High Performance Faxing
This Office All-In-One achieves Super G3 Hi-speed fax in color and B&W, and its memory can store 40 coded speed dials and up to 100 incoming pages.
Print from Memory Cards / Cameras
Want to print photos directly from a compatible memory card without using your computer? Just insert the card into a built-in slot, select images on the LCD display, and print! You can also print photos directly from your digital camera/DV camcorder.

I was disappointed to find out that this printer (unlike many other Canons) does NOT support printing on CDs. No printer in the US is allowed to print straight onto CDs, but many can be modified to do this. However, this printer cannot be modified to print CDs. Hence my 4 stars, instead of 5.
Scanner works well enough so far, including the automatic page feed. I have not tried to scan a large number of pages yet, so I can't say anything about that supposed issue. I also have not used the fax.
A duplexer would be nice, but I was not willing to pay for it.
Overall - great value for the money!
BUT, the reason I am so happy I decided to purchase this machine is its built-in networking. Let me tell you, the networking works and it works perfectly. I agonized over whether to purchase the MP830, which doesn't have networking, and every time I use the MX700 I thank my lucky stars that I decided (at the last moment) to go with the MX700 instead. Everyone in our house has a computer and we all need to print occasionally. We use Windows XP configured as a workgroup. It was a complete no-brainer to set everyone up to print to the networked MX700. This is a huge advantage over the option of having the printer attached to a specific computer. If that computer gets turned off or has a glitch, printing would be interrupted. With the networked MX700, we can always print when we want to. I am so glad I didn't have to figure out a way to get the MP830 to work on the network!
Also, I should mention that the scan software works really well in a networked environment. It is easy to scan a single sheet (platen) or multiple sheets (sheet feeder) directly to the computer over the network. You shouldn't hesitate to install the software on one of your machines to accept scans. I found that the software installed easily and hasn't caused any problems. However, I don't like to install unnecessary software and you don't need it if all you want to do is print. So, I only installed the software on the computer in the same room as the printer and all scans go to that computer.
There is only one minor negative I can think of. This printer needs to be physically turned on before it can accept a print job. It would be nice if it sensed a print job and turned itself on. We had an HP LaserJet that did this and it was really convenient because you could initiate a print from another room in the house so that the printing takes place while you are walking over to pick up your print job.
FAX works fine, except that it insists on answering the telephone occasionally, even in the middle of a voice conversation. If I really needed to keep the FAX permanently plugged in to the phone line, this would give it at most 3 instead of 4 stars in my evaluation...but I just disconnect the phone connection until I want to use the FAX.
For the price, it is one fantastic machine - and archival color printing, as well!
Note that the ink package recommended by Amazon includes the correct (number 8) color ink tanks but a smaller than standard (unusable?) number 8 black ink tank also, instead of the correct number 5 (for the black tank only).
