It's a great little camera. When I don't want to haul around my DSLR this little thing is a great alternative. It may not do the heavy lifting of the big boys but returns some surprisingly clear shots. Limited aperture control, especially at higher zoom, would be my only complaint. But for the price I shouldn't complain.

Got a refurbished model, and no problems so far. I am using it for UAV mapping.

..I just don't. But I read A TON of them before making any purchases. After finally pulling the trigger on this camera, exploring its features, and taking tons of pictures, I had to write a review (especially with all the negativity out there).

I read just about everything there is to know about this camera over the last couple of months, constantly hesitating to take the plunge because of the mixed reviews and horror stories you've probably heard too.

But the price was perfect.. 250 was my budget. I wanted the best quality for the price, the cleanest and easiest UI and control operation possible, and enough features to keep me exploring and learning more about photography.

I got it all of what I wanted, and none of the horror along with it. I have zero complaints about the camera whatsoever aside from the nitpicky things that are mentioned all over the place like the location of the flash.. I've just learned to hold the camera differently. Not a big deal.

Anyway, if you're like me reading another one of a thousand reviews of this camera, just order it and check the serial number when you get it. If you're with the range of potentially defective cameras (29xxx-41xxx), exchange it for another. I ordered mine in December 2012 and got a 47xxx.

As always, amazon delivers great service and shipping as well.

I'll update if i ever have issues.

We were enthusiastic about this camera after the positive reviews, as previous owners of an S90, which lasted us a good 3 years (and probably would have lasted longer if not for an unfortunate incident involving sand at the beach). So, it seemed like a no-brainer to upgrade to the S100. The S90 was a fabulous pick for is because it takes great, fast photos in low-light on automatic mode, but still has lots of custom settings for my husband who likes to play around with settings and experiment with different kinds of exposures, etc.

So we bought this camera primarily to continue to photograph our day-to-day adventures with our active 3 year old, and hopefully in a few months, her new sibling. However, the performance has been dramatically slower. In auto-mode, it takes a good 1-3 seconds to focus (pressing the shutter halfway) and yet another 1-3 seconds after that to actually SNAP the photo. Completely unacceptable when you have moving subjects like a toddler. By the time the shutter goes, the subject has already moved and the results are many blurry shots. We never had this experience with the S90, or friends/families with the S95. We ensured that settings which might slow things down (such as red-eye reduciton) were turned off, and after a few months, the frustration was just too much and we are trying to return it.

Canon refuses to provide a refund since we didn't purchase it through them, but Amazon appears to be willing to take it back. I'm sure we won't get our full money back, but I appreciate Amazon's attempt to make the situation better. We are going to look into the Panasonic Lumix line...

I have had the s100 for a few weeks now. Over all it is a great little camera, but it is not a replacement for a DSLR. I do a lot of stuff in the mountains of Colorado. I just returned from a back country ski trip into a hut system. The photos that this camera made were quite good. It performed quite well at very cold temperatures. The lens is very sharp. Over all I gave it 5 stars but actually I almost gave it 4 because because time exposures over one second are limited to iso 100. This time exposure issue would not be a problem for most people, it's just that I like to take pictures to the night sky from high altitude, but for this my DSLR is better anyway. Never the less it still does 15 second exposures at iso 100 which would be great for photos of things like city lights at night, etc.

Pros: Excellent picture quality, Best image stabilization I have ever seen, very small, buttons and controls are easy to figure out and not so easy to change by accident, the camera has some interesting special effects and shooting modes but for me, I do all that in Photoshop, I like the automatic lens cover, and the flash is quite powerful for it's size, you can turn the GPS off completely to save battery life, the burst mode is amazing for action shots, it seems quite solid with a case made of metal, it has an easy to grip texture which will help prevent its being dropped.

Cons: Battery life is relatively short (I got 4 extra original Canon batteries used on Amazon for less than $25), the GPS doesn't seem to be accurate all the time, there is the issue of time exposures limited to iso 100, you can't add an external flash but the built in flash is actually quite good.

This camera has a nice relatively wide angle lens. I prefer more wide angle over more zoom.

Bought this for my mom during Gold Box deal. Haven't had any issues so far although we've only used it for a few days. I have an S95 also and the pics are pretty equivalent. Easier to hold than the S95.

My only qualm with this camera is that I was hoping to get better depth-of-field blurring with the aperture wide open. The overall image quality is great and the size makes it easy to travel with.

As a true amateur, I asked a professional photographer friend to recommend a camera that would take "postcard perfect" shots with little to no effort from me. I got that and more with this little camera. The pictures are amazing!

The zoom made it look like I was right there with the wildlife I was shooting from a safe distance. The stabilizer is phenomenal, as I took perfect pictures from the back of a moving horse, and fit easily in my pocket.

It has a boatload of features I will probably never use, but for me this camera has not disappointed and is well worth the investment.

Replaced an old Fuji I loved but the MP were too low so I got this camera and seem happy so far.
