Product description
From the Manufacturer
Color communicates. It introduces you before you say a word, making the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph the ultimate image-maker. Five fashion-forward hues expressed in pure aluminum add a new burst of excitement to Canons Perpetual Curve design. Of course, a camera that brings out the best in you also delivers Canons most advanced technology features. Call it style with substance, for a new level of picture taking pleasure.
PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph Highlights
Enhanced Canon Face Detection Technology Canon's powerful Face Detection Technology delivers even better results with the new SD1100 IS Digital Elph. The Face Detection Technology continues to recognize faces in a scene, and concentrate exposure (daylight or flash) and focus upon them. But the SD1100 IS Digital Elph adds more: Face Detection WB means the camera concentrates upon faces when calculating white balance for the best possible skin tones. Face Select and Track lets the SD1100 IS Digital Elph user highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene. Face Detection Technology is a powerful contributing factor in Canon's new Motion Detection Technology.
Motion Detection Technology automatically reduces blur Life doesnt stand still for picture-taking. Thats why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear.
When you need higher ISOs for action-stopping shutter speeds, Motion Detection Technology provides it. But when no movement is detected, it allows lower ISOs for excellent color and detail. So whether youre shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a childs soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing youve got the picture you intended.
Selectable Shooting modes With 18 Shooting Modes including 9 Special Scene Modes, youre ready for whatever shot comes your way.
2.5-inch PureColor LCD II for bright, accurate color The PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph gives you large 2.5-inch LCD screen for excellent control when framing your shots. Canons PureColor LCD II offers more spectacular color, resolution and contrast even when viewed at an angle (compared to PureColor LCD). The screen is highly durable and easy to see in any light with a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating. It also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light -- a perfect feature for gathering friends and family around to see your images.
DIGIC III Image Processor for sharper images and improved functionality With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. Whats more, DIGIC III enables Canons Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. Red-eye Correction can be handled in-camera, in two ways. The entirely new Red-eye Correction during shooting uses the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from flash images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the SD1100 IS Digital Elph's menu.
iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
Red-eye correction Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
- The new Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
- The SD1100 IS Digital Elph can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
- The user can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.
High ISO The PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility.

In-depth review from dpreview.com:The SD1100 is a 'typical' IXUS/SD in many respects. It is compact, well built and sports a reasonably attractive design. It offers good output quality in most situations - straight out of the cam - only requiring minimal user intervention. It is also typical in so far as you won't find any groundbreaking innovations on the spec sheet. As usual Canon has chosen the safe route by sticking to what they know best. If it is the extraordinary you are after, go and look somewhere else.

PROS
1. Size. It fits comfortably in my shirt pocket. Convenient to whip out when a photo op arises. Very important to me.
2. Easy to use and set up. With the auto flash, it is simply a point and shoot camera....after choosing the desired zoom.
3. Excellent image stabilization. Absolutely necessary after owning cameras that did not have it.
4. Surprisingly good photo quality for a compact point and shoot camera. Can't tell difference from my old SLR.
5. The biggest surprise of all was the excellent video quality. I remember paying over $1,000 for a VHS video camera many years ago, but this camera takes much better videos, with excellent sound to boot. Not to mention the huge increase in convenience.
CONS
1. NONE.
I strongly suggest getting a second battery. You'll be very upset if you don't have it when it's needed.....or wanted. I heartily recommend this camera.
A few weeks ago I was right here looking at the SD1100IS camera again wondering if I should buy it again just because of how good a camera it was, or buy newer. I noticed a USED tab and saw this camera in "good" condition for sale at $48. Never purchased something USED on Amazon. Read about the "A-Z Garantee" and all that mess, but really knew I was probably rolling the dice for 50 bucks. I did it.
The USED Canon SD1100IS showed up two days ago. Looks like it's been to Hell and back. Scratched, dented, paint chiped. Ours was the opposite; always in a soft case and looked like new. This one looked like it had spent it's life floating around in a purse full of keys...and angry birds. LOL. Well, it worked perfectly. Not only does it worked perfectly and take great pictures, just like ours did...but it made me realize all over again what a great camera this is.
We don't use 90% of the features of any of these digital cameras, but if you just want a solid performer then this is it. I never knew how tough this camera was, because we took good care of ours. Buying this used one shows me they can take a beating and still offer the same quality in function.
Thanks for listening.

Updated Comment from Aug 2012 - The other 'used' camera came with an extra charger and memory card we didn't really need - sooo, I had an idea. My soon-to-be 15 year old needed a camera so I found ANOTHER of this exact same model USED on Amazon from "KEH Camera" - and he had good reviews so I took a chance with another $53. This newest used camera is in as good a condition as our stolen one was! Anyway, my kid is not the MOST responsible, so I'd rather her lose a $53 camera [that takes pictures like a $300 camera], than lose a brand new $100 camera that takes pictures like a $100 camera and eats batteries. :)

Update 8/6/2013 - One year later. Was going through old reviews and decided to update this on the 'crazy' chance somebody reads them. Both of those USED cameras are still doing great. Total investment of $101 dollars for two cameras originally costing $250+ each. Oddly, I've noticed a few folks with newer cameras and these old Canons are still as good or better. If you are trying to decied whether to traverse the confusing landscape of what camera to invest in, I recommend looking at the "Used" tab on Amazon product sights - verifying the 'trustworthy' vendors that are Amazon certified - and considering trying a used/refurbished camera first.
