Product Description
For anyone with an EOS R series camera, add the RF50mm F1.8 STM lens to that list. As a 50mm lens it’s already compact, but as part of the EOS R System, it’s even more compact due to its compatibility with an EOS R camera body, so there’s every reason to keep it attached or put in your bag so you can shoot – and get a great shot – anywhere and anytime. Size isn’t all though. As a fixed focal length lens, it lets you be creative with composition and can be used for a wide range of scenes, from snapshots to portraits to landscapes and more. Those images will stand out, too, just like you intend whether on social media or just sharing, thanks to impressive optical features like a PMo aspherical lens to suppress aberrations, coatings to reduce flaring and ghosting, and a large f/1.8 aperture for low-light shooting and circular bokeh. Pick it up and use it one time and you’ll see for yourself, and you won’t be able to leave the house without it.

AF is excellent in both stills and video. IBIS works great. MF is usable when needed.
Image quality has been improved quite a bit,
1. Wide open contrast and sharpness are very good in central 2/3rds of the image - even better if you apply DXO lens module corrections, then it goes from very good to excellent
2. For me from F/2.8 onwards image quality is top notch. Images from this one are mostly indistinguishable from L lenses - the difference is not so much the sharpness but more in the color saturation & contrast where the L lenses are a fraction superior.
2. Wide open Bokeh quality has improved a little, see the image. Wide open bokeh are softer now on Full Frame for most subject/background distances, there are a few occasions where bokeh does get busy. Stopped down bokeh is meh / distracting still.
There is nothing else out there with this much image quality/$.

I got this lens for my Canon R10, which does not have in body stabilization. This being a fast lens, I didn't it would be a big deal. But I was wrong.
But that's not the only issue, nor is it the biggest. Autofocus with this lens is absolutely atrocious. Not only is it incredibly slow (like unbelievably slow), but it really struggles to focus on anything at all. I missed so many great shots because this lens simply either refused to focus at all, or couldn't maintain focus for some unknown reason.
During the day that I owned this lens I shot in a variety of lighting conditions, including bright, full sun, midday daylight, indoor daytime with lights on, and at night with studio lights on. Using this lens without any artificial light source indoors was a complete fail. Even with studio lights, this lens failed to live up to the hype in a very big way.
I shot maybe about a 100 photos throughout the course of a day, and out of those I only have two mediocre 'keepers'. And those two 'keepers'
I could have easily shot with the 14-45mm kit lens that came with the R10. I mean yeah, the bokeh wouldn't be quite as creamy as it is with the 'iffy fifty', but the focus would be tack sharp, something that the 'iffy fifty' just couldn't provide.
Most R series cameras have IBIS, so its possible that the issues that I experienced don't present themselves for a vast majority of 'iffy fifty' owners. Either way, I sent it back with a quickness. Total waste of time and money. The hype around this lens is absolutely mind boggling. Can't imagine IBIS making enough of a difference to redeem this lens. PASS.
I love how light and compact this lens is, and on a full-frame sensor 50mm is a fun focal length to play around with. The only ricky thing with this lens has more to do with the new focus/control ring system the RF cameras now have the ability to do. The ring on the lens can be swapped between focus mode or control ring mode, where the former works as expected (as long as your settings are set correctly in camera) and the latter allows you to select many different options (iso, apurture, shutter speed, etc) to control by simply twisting the ring. A handy feature, but one to get used to as focusing for so many years had my brain and hands programmed for that focusing function.
Excellent value for what you get, and it’s a fast enough lens still as well to photograph in near pitch-black situations with usable results. The RF system is incredible.

Amazon really needs to play better attention to this. Like if you're going to sell GREY MARKET Canon lenses put it in the description "This is a grey market item and does not include the manufacturers warranty".

Amazon really needs to play better attention to this. Like if you're going to sell GREY MARKET Canon lenses put it in the description "This is a grey market item and does not include the manufacturers warranty".

Works well for video, but in low-light and in a busy environment (wedding) you need to know how to use the AF or it will constantly hunt, and it hunts slowly. Filming constantly wide open at 1/48s, high ISO, hand-held with digital IS, the R5C produces some very nice footage using this lens! For $200 this is the best bang for the buck lens you can get.
Now for people who complain about lack of warranty and deducting stars for that, you are paying here about $100 less than buying it from an authorized dealer, so if you want that 1 year warranty, you are more than welcome to pay the extra $100. In my experience lenses almost never fail in the 1st year. If there is something wrong with a lens, it will be like that as soon as you open the box, and Amazon offers you a 1 month return period. If that's not enough, there is a 4 year 3rd party warranty you can buy for $43, if you're so inclined. My lens arrived new and works flawlessly.

For $200 though, I'm OK with taking that risk. At that price it's 20% lower than the "sale" price in Canada, and $20 more than the price for a "gently used" example at the local camera shop. I've purchased lots of Canon gear over the years and have never had an issue with any of it. While this is my first grey market purchase, I'm expecting a similar experience.
As for the lens itself the autofocus is noticeably quieter and quicker than the EF version. Weight seems roughly the same but the adapter makes the EF just that much heavier. The RF model has the advantage of the control/focus ring.
