Review summary from DPReview

DPReview Tested
June 2015
The Rebel T6i is an evolutionary follow-up to the T5i, adding a higher resolution sensor and improved autofocus, but with no significant changes in physical design. Its image quality is on par with most of its peers and the camera is capable of creating beautiful photos.

Personal takes

Rishi Sanyal Rishi Sanyal Deputy/Tech Editor
The Rebel T6i sees significant upgrades from its predecessor that brings it more in line with its peers. It's a great first camera for someone wanting to learn photography and tap into Canon's extensive lens lineup. Those desiring a more worry-free point-and-shoot experience may wish to consider credible mirrorless options, though.
Dale Baskin Dale Baskin Reviewer
The Canon T6i may not look that different from previous Rebel models, but it includes a couple of significant upgrades, including a 24 megapixel sensor and a 19-point autofocus system. However, lack of continuous autofocus in live view makes the camera less flexible for shooting moving subjects, such as kids, than its sibling, the Rebel T6s. The Rebel T6i is a good camera for a beginner who wants to learn photography, and of course it's compatible with Canon's large selection of lenses.

Reasons to buy

  • Solid sensor: Canon's new 24MP CMOS sensor produces very good image quality, with resolution and low light performance similar to its peers.
  • Rotating touchscreen LCD: The Rebel's 3" 1.04 million dot LCD display can flip to the side and rotate 270 degrees, which is great for video recording. The touch features allow for easy focusing and photo review.
  • Wi-Fi with NFC: Sharing photos via your smartphone takes just a 'tap'. Photos and movies can be tagged for sharing to social media sites right on the camera.

Things to consider

  • Fewer AF points with limited frame coverage: Although the 19-point AF system is an upgrade over previous Rebels, total number of points and frame coverage suffer relative to immediate peers.
  • Trouble with movement: Whether shooting with the viewfinder or LCD, the T6i struggles to track moving subjects.
  • No direct access to autofocus point selection: When shooting through the viewfinder, there's no direct access to AF point selection. You have to first press a dedicated button, then use the dial or 4-way controller.
  • Weak battery: The Rebel's battery life number of 440 shots per charge is nearly half that of its closest DSLR competitor.

Sophisticated, Automated Movie Recording

EOS Full HD Video

Using technologies designed for professionals and refined for simplicity, the EOS Rebel T6i camera makes gorgeous, polished Full HD videos at the press of a button. Technologies like advanced Hybrid CMOS AF III mean the camera focuses fast, and stays focused, even if the subject is moving. Advanced EOS optics help deliver shallow depth-of-field to provide the beautiful cinematic ambiance seen in professional films. Canon STM lenses provide smooth AF when shooting moving subjects, and the high ISO sensitivity allows the camera to record videos in low light with reduced image noise for clear, sharp footage. An automatic wind noise elimination feature makes sure voices and music do not get drowned out by the sound of the wind blowing. Videos are recorded in MP4 format, which helps provide high quality videos that take up relatively little storage space, but are also easy to share and upload. Canon offers a wide selection of compatible EF and EF-S lenses too choose from, so users have the freedom to create truly unique videos to express their artistic vision. With Canon EOS, it's easier than ever to expand your imaging possibilities.

Faster Focus, Improved Tracking

Hybrid CMOS AF III

The EOS Rebel T6i camera features a robust, sophisticated AF system for Live View and video shooting. This Hybrid CMOS AF III focuses incredibly quickly and accurately, and maintains focus even while the subject is in motion. This is incredibly useful when photographing or making videos of fast-moving children or pets when unpredictable movement is involved. Designed for providing the best possible autofocus capability, the EOS Rebel T6i delivers photos and videos with sharp, consistent focus regardless of the shooting situation. When using the EOS Rebel T6i with a Canon STM lens, operation is even smoother and quieter.

Sharp and Clear, with Tactile Controls

Vari-angle Touch Screen ClearView II LCD Monitor

Canon EOS Rebel DSLR cameras that come with a Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch ClearView II LCD monitor use capacitive technology similar to today's popular mobile devices. The screen is touch-sensitive and delivers intuitive touch panel operation. Two-finger touch gestures can be used for zooming or changing images. Menu and quick control settings can be accessed, and focus point and shutter release can be activated with the touch of a fingertip using Touch AF. Displaying fine detail (at approximately 1.04 million dots), this screen is perfect for composing and reviewing images. Thanks to a solid construction between the monitor's resin-coated cover and the liquid crystal display, reflections are minimized, and the display can be viewed, without glare, from any number of angles. The LCD's surface is treated with a smudge-resistant coating to minimize fingerprints and maintain a bright, clear image display.

Fast-Action Shots are Easy to Capture

High-speed continuous shooting

The EOS Rebel T6i camera can shoot up to 5.0 frames per second, continuously. Whether capturing that perfect expression, the game's winning goal, or the bride walking down the aisle, the EOS Rebel T6i delivers the speed and performance for amazing results.

Intelligent Scene Analysis for Exceptional Results

Advanced Scene Analysis

The EOS Rebel T6i camera features an updated scene analysis system that detects the prominent light source in a scene and makes adjustments to the camera's exposure, focus and color settings to account for the prevailing light. A new RGB+IR sensor that's capable of detecting near infrared light and flickering light sources enhances the Scene analysis system's accuracy. This means the EOS Rebel T6i can minimize the effects of fluorescent light; it takes gorgeous photos in twilight, and it can detect skin tones, for accurate exposure and focus in portraits. The camera can even make the greens in landscapes more vivid!

Consistent, High Performance AF

19-point all cross-type AF system

For shooting through the viewfinder, the EOS Rebel T6i camera features an updated 19-point all cross-type AF system with improved tracking of moving subjects perfect for capturing action with accuracy. Cross-type AF points maintain accurate focus even if the camera is held vertically or horizontally, no matter where on the frame focus is first achieved. The EOS Rebel T6i also features three focusing area selection modes that make accurate focus even easier. Single point AF allows users to easily choose any one of the 19 focus points for precise focus. In Zone AF, one of 5 zones is selected and focus is locked within that area of the composition. With 19-point automatic selection AF, the camera detects the subject automatically. This is especially useful in shooting sports or other unpredictable motion.

Simple to Preview, Easy to Shoot

Fun Creative Filters

The EOS Rebel T6i camera comes with a number of different creative filters that are available as presets and can be previewed before shooting. Effects include Art Bold, Water Painting, Fisheye effect, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Grainy Black and White plus Miniature effect in both still photographs and movie mode. With incredibly different effects, creative filters are a terrific way to express or enhance the mood of a scene and make photography with EOS Rebel DSLR cameras even more fun.

I figure i would write a review for this camera considering there isn't very many. Unfortunately i am very new to photography and this is my first real camera. So far in the 3 days ive owned it i have taken some pretty amazing photos (well they are amazing to me). The camera seems solid and doesn't feel like its going to break. The grip feels nice in my hand and the buttons and menu are easy to navigate. I'm not electronically handicapped so i have been able to figure out the menus maybe faster than the average person. If you are looking for a good entry level dslr camera i would recommend this one. Any questions feel free to ask i will try to answer them! I also bought a Canon EF-S 50-250mm lens so i could have a little better zoom for birds and other wildlife. My next goal for a lens i think will be a 600mm cause i want to be able to take nice photos of wildlife! Enough rambling thanks for reading!

I was fortunate to purchase this through Amazon (I think it is interesting that mostly it is only available through third party vendors on the marketplace), as I decided to return it because I just wasn't satisfied. I did not have the spots on the sensor that have been noted, but I found the shutter noisy (compared to a t2i), and I was disturbed by the fact that the video control is now part of the on/off switch. There were some other minor changes to control buttons from earlier rebels to accommodate the fully articulating viewfinder, but the video control is the only problematic one for me. While I like the new viewfinder, I was surprised that the touchscreen still requires use of the control wheel for some functions. The main reason I returned the unit is that the image quality just did not seem to warrant the upgrade from my current 18.1 mp rebel. I enjoy wildlife photography, especially of birds, and so crop a fair amount and I was excited to see what the additional pixels and autofocus points of the t6i mean for improved image quality. In direct comparisons there was minimal difference, though I will acknowledge that color was a bit more vibrant on the new t6i. I did not use the wifi function (but I use the eyefi mobi card in my t2i, so don't really need this function), or the video to can't speak to how well these work. If you are new to the Canon rebel line, this is probably a worthy entry level camera. If you already have an earlier version, especially the newer t5i, you'll have to decide if the added pixels is worth the upgrade. It wasn't for me, though I may rent the t6s version and see if more time with the camera makes me like it more.

Update 6/25/15 - I have spent another two weeks with the camera (I rented it), and have upgraded my review with an additional star.

I have had this camera for a couple weeks now as I preordered a couple months ago and probably got one of the first shipments. Being my first DSLR, I am sorry to say that I am not qualified to provide a comprehensive review or comparisons but I will share that I absolutely love this camera. As a beginner, one of the feelings you want to avoid is that the equipment you are learning with will in some way hold you back due to its inadequacies. That is far from the case with this camera. Used simply as a point and shoot, it will of course return amazing pictures (which I do appreciate at the moment) but I also see the potential for growth with it and the canon system of lenses. I am already learning so much about digital photography and am spoiled to have this as my tool. In the hands of someone more experienced, I'm sure you could create professional results.

Worth noting: Though my serial number suggests that mine could be one of the cameras affected by the speckled sensor, I have thoroughly checked both my images and the sensor itself and found them to be clear. If you have not heard about this, it is definitely something to look into. I would suspect, however, if you are ordering now, the problem has been fixed.

After a few days of shooting with the Rebel T6i, after owning an older Rebel for 10 years. Now I will need a few weeks to blow out many of the features and stress test the customizations, but here are my inital thoughts. First off, when paired with Canon lenses, everything is lighting fast. I own a Tameron 18-300 lens that is struggling to focus as fast as the camera is looking for it to. My Canon high-speed macro lens worked lightning fast, and even in a breeze was able to meter and focus quickly and accurately on my roses. I primarily shoot via the optical viewfinder, but having a pull-out touchscreen LCD is helpful for tripod photography. Controls are well-placed and easily accessible (though I have large hands), and weight is actually a little lighter than my old model. I've played around with the Wi-Fi features and I need to compare performance of the remote shutter against my wired remote. Wireless transfer of photos to my phone is seamless. Below is a picture I took with my macro lens, without any post-processing

This is a fantastic camera. I'm an amateur enthusiast and I'm learning a lot on this compact SLR; It's compatible with all of Canon's lenses and my photographer friends are able to teach me on it with their accessories, flashes and lenses because of that. It takes amazing 1080p video and with the mic that comes as part of this kit, the audio is very clear and loud. The articulating screen, which is a touchscreen, is intuitive and useful for reviewing photos and for setting up focus for shots and video. I love the wifi feature to transfer photos to my phone quickly. Overall, there's nothing more I could ask for in a camera. It's lightweight enough to carry around without issues, but sturdy enough to have a substantial feeling in my hands. And the kit lens does a pretty good job, even if the zoom is obviously not as far as a longer lens would be. I'm very happy with this camera and satisfied with my investment.
