Others have reviewed this camera technically and demonstrated its abilities. I chose the SX30is because it saves much of the weight and bulk of SLR cameras, doesn't have their maintenance problems, and giving up lens interchangeability is not much of a sacrifice to the everyday photographer. I win my share of contests and accolades.

What I particularly like:
1) The camera is great for chasing my grandchildren across a soccer field or in the yard. The 'back away' button lets me find them quickly if I lose the action.
2) The 35X lens lets me take candid pictures of them from far enough that they don't pay attention to the cameraman. It is a bit slow to focus at times but I'm learning strategies to get around that. It doesn't fire off thirty frames in rapid succession but does take a nice series among which one or two make me look like a competent photographer.
3) The flip screen is ESSENTIAL to my photography. I use it in several ways.
a) It allows me to get low -- on the ground, under, and inside -- to line up shots physically impossible with other cameras. Try to get a shot through the underside of a pansy petal backlit by the sun with a conventional on-camera screen!
b) I use it to steady the camera on long shots. With an on-camera screen I need to hold the camera in the air to shoot a bird in the tree tops. With the flip screen, I hold the camera down, braced by the neck strap, rotate the screen for viewing, and extend the lens. When I find the bird, I shoot with no shake or tremble.
c) I use it to see over the heads of the crowd and get the shot of the winning goal or parade queen they will miss for the jostling.
d) I use it in other ways but I'm not giving away ALL my techniques. Suffice to say this type screen is perfect.

Upgrading from an earlier Canon SX model, exceeds every expectation! Incredible zoom. Much wider exposure range. More pixels increases effectiveness of digital zoom.
Large view screen enables decent sharing vehicle for showing pictures and has much better visibility outdoors. Very much worth the wait. The double anti-shake system actually works and allows decent full 35X shots without a tripod.

Have preferred using rechargeable AA batteries, but the large capacity of the "special" battery is a fair trade-off. Just be sure to acquire a spare battery for back-up. I use this for home inspection pictures which benefits from the unparalleled versatility from low light to the articulated view screen for difficult or inaccessible locations. Also wonderful for nature shots.
The kit makes it ready to go at a decent price.
Having to print out the real manual is poor practice, but the pdf manual is good.

Seemed like a miracle to get all this capability for around $400. However the camera is essentially a point -and - shoot with a very wide range lens. By the time I figured this out, the 2 week return time had expired. (I thought it was 30 days) The deluxe pkg does make this quite a bargain if you can accept its limitations. Since I photograph wildlife and water skiers, the limited capabilities in burst mode (slow focus) made this camera unusable.

I have only had the camera for 3 wks but am very pleased. I am an artist and amateur photographer who bought my first Cannon a S2is 6 yrs ago. I am on the ocean and rivers frequently taking photos of our trips and beautiful scenery for reference for my art. I needed to replace the S2is and chose the SX30is to replace it because of it's 35 optical zoom. I needed the zoom for long distance yet didn't want to have the complication of trying to put on a zoom lens of an SLR camera while bouncing around in the ocean instead needing something I could quickly grab when I see a whale breach or a fish jump.

This camera is actually easier to use. I have always loved the feature of having the varible viewer or being able to save my battery power by using the eye viewer. The varible viewer is handy in crowds or at the zoo where you can turn the viewer downward and hold the camera in the air above you. Or you can put it at ground level turning it to view something underneath or in a difficult position such as flowers. The LED is supper and doesn't have as much problem viewing in bright sunlight.

The movie and sound quality is excellant and a bonus I believe I will use more often due to it's simplicity to switch between still photos or movie. One button to push and since I need reading glasses to see dials I don't have to search for the right setting. Just push, point and shoot. The picture quality captures movement very well in a still shot too!

The SX30is is much lighter although the lens is larger and sticks out farther from the base making it off balance I have learned how to position and hold it to offset. I do like that is is lighter and black instead of silver when I am photographing birds or deer it's doesn't attract their attention.

I knew what I was getting, a big honking telephoto zoom lens bonded to a camera with decent, if awkwardly placed, controls. Best for birders, nature photographers, anyone who wants to shoot performers from back in the crowd. Too much shutter lag for sports. Occasional purple fringe that can be diminished in Photoshop with a filter. Low light images are noisy, since the sensor is the same size as a compact camera. Get a decent flash you can use to bounce your light for fill-in.

What! You expected a DSLR at these prices? I didn't and am happy with my choice.

The case is crap and ripped within a month. The SD card adapter stopped working soon after. You'll need another decent-sized SD card or two. The other add-ons are are on the cheesy side.
