The size is small and does fit the SD1400 nicely. There isn't room for anything else except maybe a very thin gel pack for moisture purposes. You can not fit the wrist strap that comes with the camera inside so you will need to remove it. The case has it's own strap that attaches either on the top or bottom of the case. It doesn't affect performance, more of a preference thing.
I was concerned about "the number of buttons" that were usable. For the average person taking pictures with the SD1400 point and shoot, the buttons used are more than enough. You can control Auto, which takes over everything; P-mode, which gives you the underwater, beach or snow options and switch to video mode. P-mode allows you to set the flash off, auto, or on. You can review images in the case, but come on, really, who's reviewing images while in the water??? That's whats great about digital. You take a few and review when you get back to dry land.
I had no issue with fogging of the lens and I didn't use a gel pack. I installed the camera while inside the hotel room. Not once did it fog on me... in the water or out.
No issue with leaking. Bone dry. The O-ring is a little hard to grab. I found the rounded edge of the flash diffuser makes for a great wedge that pulls the o-ring out of the grooved area without harming it. Pea sized silicone grease on your fingers spread around the O-ring and you are good to go.
The pictures I took were excellent and I would recommend this underwater case to anyone with the SD1400. For those complaining about "limited functionality," lets remember that this case is under $200 and you are taking pictures with a point and shoot. You want PRO quality video and pictures, buy a Canon 7D and Ikelite underwater housing for about $4000.
Summary: Great price. Excellent quality photos and video. Enough functionality that the average, everyday photographer will thoroughly enjoy this underwater case. Glad I purchased it.
As mentiioned in one of the other reviews this housing provides a simplified interface. I like that feature because when the camera is in the under water housing I want it to be in underwater mode. With other cases I spend significant time searching through menus to get the camera into underwater mode. This case/camera combination does that for you on power up.
Another plus is that the housing is really optimized around the SD1400IS camera so that it can be as small as possible. The housing is taylor fit. I find that I can even stuff the housing into my BC pocket while diving if I don't want to carry it in my hand. In spite of its small size the housing appears as rugged as any Canon underwater housing I have seen.
One complication with the small size is that a full dessicant pack will not fit into the housing with the camera. I solve this by cutting each dessicant pack into two or three small packs so that they can fit.
When compared to Ikelite and similar heavy duty housings Canon housings have a thinner main o-ring. This means that you need to use a little extra care when closing the housing to make sure that the seal is good. With any housing it is probably best to clean and lube the o-ring with a little silicone grease before each use. The housing comes with a little tube of silicone grease for that purpose. On our last dive trip the housing did not make exactly the right sound when I closed it. I should have reopened it and cleaned and greased the o-ring. The result was a flooded camera, my fault.
I like this housing and plan to use it for diving in the future.
With this case, I was able to take hundreds of underwater pictures and editing them after made this case so worthwhile.
Bottomline - takes great shots and video, and it easy to use!
