From the Manufacturer

Easily capture life’s most precious moments with the new ZR-series Canon camcorders. These easy-to-use MiniDV camcorders feature Genuine Canon Optics in an affordable yet ultra-compact and sleek design that will deliver the high level of performance you’ve come to expect from Canon.

Canon ZR900 Highlights

Genuine Canon 41x Advanced Zoom Now you can capture true widescreen 16:9 video with stunning image quality from any distance -- all the way up to 41x. Canon’s exclusive Advanced Zoom system combines Genuine Canon Optics with Canon’s proprietary DIGIC DV Image Processor to let you seamlessly zoom both wide and long, retaining optical quality throughout the zoom range.

Quick Start Instead of powering off your camcorder between shots, simply press the Quick Start function to put the camcorder in stand-by mode. Quick Start considerably reduces the power consumption of the battery and allows the user to return to recording mode in less than a second, so you’ll never have to miss another special moment.

Widescreen HR recording The ZR900 records true widescreen for picture perfect video. Canon’s image processing system uses the entire width of the image sensor, capturing a big picture in true 16:9 widescreen so no one and nothing is left unseen. And Canon camcorders take advantage of more pixels to give you amazing quality.

2.7-inch widescreen LCD A widescreen LCD lets you see exactly what your camcorder is recording, and what your TV will display later.

Image stabilizer Shoot rock-steady video -- even when you’re at maximum telephoto without a tripod. It is even effective while panning or zooming.

LCD video light Shooting in low light situations has never been easier with Canon’s new LCD video light. The next time you are using your ZR900 in a dimly lit room, simply flip over the LCD screen to face your subject and activate the video light function. A soft light emanating from your LCD illuminates the area in which you are shooting, allowing you to get high quality video even in less than ideal lighting conditions.

Joystick The joystick makes using the camcorder easier than ever. You can control playback, focusing, exposure, and menu options from one convenient place.

DIGIC DV image processor Video and photos require different image processing. Unlike other manufacturers’ camcorders which process video and photos the same way, DIGIC DV treats them differently. This results in video and photos with exceptional color and clarity.

Smooth zoom control With this innovative feature, you can always be sure of smooth, steady, professional looking zoom shots. Simply select one of three pre-set zoom speeds. You can also select variable so you can control the speed manually.

Level Shot and Grid Markers It's easy to keep your ZR900 level for more professional-looking video. Simply press the Level Shot Control button, and a horizontal marker appears in your viewfinder. Then line up any horizontal lines in your shot to the marker and you know your camcorder is level. The Grid marker is also very convenient for setting up the special balance in your shots. And since background colors vary, you can select from two line colors to make the lines easily visible.

Built-in lens cover A built-in lens cover gives you the ability to protect your Canon video lens without ever having the inconvenience of a dangling lens cap that’s easily lost.

Still image recording Capture stunning photos in 4:3 aspect ratio to an SDHC card.

Microphone/headphone terminal The ZR900 features a microphone terminal for attaching an external microphone. The audio/video terminal doubles as a headphone terminal for monitoring sound while recording.

Advanced Photo Features A variety of features allow you to capture great photos.

  • 9 Point AiAF: Bring off-center subjects into sharp focus.
  • Histogram display: With just one push of a button, the brightness information of a still image is revealed. This allows you to monitor image quality, so you can make adjustments to improve the next shots.
  • Image Effects: Choose from the following effects to add a creative flare to your photos: Vivid, Neutral, Low-Sharpening, and Soft Skin Detail.
  • Special Scene Modes: A wide selection of automatic exposure modes makes it easy to capture great video or photos under any condition. Choose from: Portrait, Sports, Night, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Spotlight, or Fireworks.

I am forced to write the review because of totally uneducated review left by "E. Robles "VJ Pike". He apparently never went to the menu section of the camera. When i get any electronic item, the first thing I do, is to go to the Menu and play around with the setting. If he had ever visited the Menu section, let alone play around with it, he wouldn't have written an embarrassing and incorrect review. While I agree with SDHC part is falsely advertised, markers and 41x zoom are not.

Go to Menu->Camera Setup->Zoom and you can select between 37x, Advanced 41x, and 2000x digital+optical zoom options.
Go to Menu->Display Setup->Marker and you can select level marker and grid options.

These are not falsely advertised, but the user did not have the opportunity to find out. I wonder if he bought the same camera or thought he did and bought something else.

Regarding the camera, its a solid performer. Zoom is more than enough. Video quality is pretty good although not the best (For something less than 200$ what do you expect? HD?).
The external mic jack is a big plus. It's very light and fits right into my hands. Mini DV allows me to get uncompressed video out of my tape. Manual controls are adequate, although they could have thrown in more controls for spot exposure, more focus controls.
One drawback is the picture is grainy when shooting in low light. Also it could have had still picture mode to a sd card or something.
I paid 185$ for this camera. I certainly am not complaining. It does what its supposed to do and it does it pretty well. I am more than satisfied with what I got for what I paid.

It is a good camcorder for the price. My only complaint is that it is firewire which limits the ability for Windows based systems to utilize the device. The 900 has only tape whereas the 950 used SDHC memory. I actually purchased the ZR950 after this purchase to get the USB connection and I am much happier.

This is a good overall camcorder. Very light and small with an excellent zoom. The video shot in well lit areas, and that shot outside, is excellent quality. Dimmer environments produce more grainy results. I'm sure all camcorders suffer from this problem, however. Expect some noise from the tape drive in very quiet situations, but it is not unreasonable. I would recomend this to a friend.

Very happy with product--thought there was a catch as I've never ordered online and the fact that it was so cheap! Cheaper than the manufacturer...no catch it was brand new and I have been using it ever since

Canon ZR900 MiniDV Camcorder with 41x Optical Zoom

Bought this camcorder as a graduation gift for my 13 year old niece. She already has an iMac and a digital camcorder so this camera fit in perfectly and she is able to take great videos and edit them in iMovie. She loves to make movies with her ZR900 and the the size, features and price is right.

We already have an entire DVD put together of our 4th of July party just two weeks ago.

I would imagine your looking at a mini Dv camcorder to use to shoot video and then edit with it. If your not planning to edit you video than go buy a mini DVD camcorder and not a mini dv camcorder, but if your like me, who likes to edit, the canon Zr is the camcorder to go with. The video standards met my requirements. Does good in low light, sharp, almost HD looking video, and video that is deep in color. The audio is clear and you can hear everything everyone says. I will be honest though. When i first bought the Zr i put it down for a week. The motor noise is unbearable especially if you use 16 bit audio. I then found out switching to 12 bit audio the camcorder does not pick it up as much but it is still constantly there. I use Pinnacle Studio 14 to edit and since the Zr microphone in my opinion is a little to sensitive and picks up unwanted noise in the background (air conditioners, motors noise, etc) turning down the volume when i edit eliminates the motor noise/unwanted noise but still leaves you with clear, good, loud sounding audio. That is why motor noise is not a big deal if you plan to edit. So don't let that be a negative point that makes you not want to buy this camcorder. Overall great camcorder, I plan on using it for a while. Also mini Dv tip: If you want you mini dv camcorder to work for a long time only use one brand of tapes and do not put in/eject allot of tapes in a small amount of time. It will mess up your camcorder. I thought Mini Dv was outdated but its really the way to go if your big on editing.

This unit was purchased to replace a Canon ZR80 that burnt out. Suprisingly the ZR80 had slightly better picture quality than this one. Where this camera excels is it's easy to use features and menus.
