As a printer, it is very fast and the print quality seems to be excellent, but as a copier, it has one deficiency: the glass size is A4, which is just slightly larger than letter size. The old copier had a much larger glass area, so it was possible to reduce some oversize documents to fit on letter size. This copier is somewhat crippled in that area.
Amazon has dropped the price on this printer by about $50 in just the last few days, so it's a great value for a home office. It's a good size, is fairly lightweight (at least in comparison with what I had before), and the set-up instructions are the best I've seen. I would not recommend this for a business, as it does not have a document feeder, besides the limited glass size.
1 scans, 2 Copies, 3 two sided printing, 4 Easy front paper loading, 5 Scans color nice surprise, looks good to. I scanned a black and white with a bit of color on parts of it picture saved it in my computer pic and colors look great, 6 This little sucker does some great gray scaling
7 It comes with a pre installed Canon toner cartridge all you have to do when you get it is open the door on the back take the cartridge out remove the plug put it back in and your ready to go, it installs easily
8 On the sides just above the bottom near the back are two spaces/handholds so you can easily lift it, some things without the hand holds sit on and hurt your fingers after setting them down. But with this theres no struggling to get your fingers out from under it it's light, easy to lift, and move
Height 11 inches. Width 15 inches. Depth 16 inches
I suggest one thing open the front hatch and let it air out because it does have a chemical like odor, but it is new and plastic so I expected that no biggie. Before leaving it to air out you can put Windex, lemon Pinesol, or a room deodorizing spray on a dampened with plain water rag open the part where the paper goes in and wipe it out this removes most of the smell, then leave the front hatch open and let it air out, it worked great for me. But never go near the insides or toner cartridge or it's connections of the printer with detergents as it can cause damage. March 19 2015 Matthew Sutterer a printer technician in a comment pointed out that Ammonia can damage the drum part of the toner cartridge, thanks Matthew
Update March 19 2015
My baby is still going strong and working like a champ, no problems or annoyances smiles
UPDATE: Changed to 5 stars, because the two main cons listed below seemed to have resolved themselves. Perhaps it was just a little slow and unresponsive due to the cold weather during shipping.
I bought this printer specifically because there were printer drivers available for both Linux and Mac OS on Canon's website, as well as promising information that the scanner would work with libsane.
A few general pros:
- Very solid. It's not one of those flimsy printers where you have to be worried about picking it up.
- Large form factor, but it's basically a box -- there are no trays or things sticking out in any direction, unless you want them to.
- Easy interface. I set it up and configured all my settings in less than 5 minutes.
A couple cons:
- A little slow between receiving a print job and actually printing it; about 10 seconds.
- Sometimes it goes into "energy save mode" and won't receive print jobs even after being woken up. So far, I can not find an option to disable the energy save mode. However, unplugging and plugging the USB cable back in immediately brings it back up.
- There is a button on the front to switch between "copy/print" and "scan" mode. When in "scan" mode, the green light on the "Start" button will turn off, and it will not receive print jobs until it is switched back into "copy/print" mode. Similarly, it will not scan while in "copy/print" mode. This is not much of an issue, but did surprise me when I had switched it by accident and suddenly couldn't print, because I am the type of man who doesn't read manuals before setting things up.
Getting it working with Linux is surprisingly simple. The printer driver is easily found on Canon's website (in .deb and .rpm format for both 32bit and 64bit), and once installed, CUPS will automatically choose the driver when setting up the printer. Printing works great.
There were a few reviews on here about not being able to scan using Linux, although it IS possible to get it working with effort. The scanner is compatible with sane-backends v1.0.25git using its existing PIXMA drivers, which must be built from source. At the time of this review, 1.0.24 is the latest version available in the repos. You can not have both versions installed simultaneously, so first, you must uninstall 'sane-backends' and 'sane-backends-drivers', if you have these installed from yum or apt-get, and then compile the sane-backends source hosted on Debian's Git repo. No further action is needed other than a standard `configure / make / sudo make install`.
After installing sane-backends, `scanimage -V` should return: "scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.25git; backend version 1.0.25"
`scanimage -L` should return: "device `pixma:04A92775' is a CANON Canon imageCLASS D530 multi-function peripheral"
The scanner works great with both the built-in `simple-scanner` tool as well as XSANE. In order to scan, press the "COPY/SCAN" button on the front, and set the scan mode to "Remote Scanner" (it will default to "Computer"). When you are finished, hit "COPY/SCAN" again to put it back into print mode.
