The Canson story began in 1557 in Annonay, France, with the Montgolfier family, renowned papermakers who established a paper mill that laid the foundation for the brand's future. By the 18th century, the Montgolfiers had gained fame not only for their exceptional paper but also for creating the first successful hot air balloon in 1782. The name "Canson" emerged in 1801 when Barthélemy Barou de la Lombardière de Canson married into the Montgolfier family and took over the business.
