We don't have the power to stop the waves from coming but we can draw on our God-given strength and ability to change the way we see the turbulent times in which we live. McKnight is able to use not just his own experiences but those of trusted individuals from around the world to help the reader see that it is possible to survive and thrive---you just have to be willing and able to change your attitude about the challenge.
There is so much in this book that resonated with me, but one of the biggest lessons that I took away is that we have to be able to look at the world not just as it is but what we want it to be. If we are able to do that then we can then begin the process to act in a way that we bring about the change we say that we want. McKnight writes this: "So, we look at the bigger picture of what is important to us in the long term. We move from there to determine the specific day to day activities that we need to accomplish what we want. Then we act on those plans to get and do what is most important to us." Faith is the beginning of the process, but it is not enough. Just like anything else we have to willing to act and do so in a way that gives our all. If we can do that then we will be on our way to not just see things differently but react differently to them as well.
Presented in such a way that there is something that will be of benefit to everyone, IF YOU CAN'T CALM THE WATERS LEARN TO RIDE THE WAVES helps to equip the reader for the turbulence that may lie ahead in the quest of pursuing their dreams.
