Writing a book is like putting together a puzzle. You find a piece here and there, and eventually there's this eureka moment when you know you have a story.
I found the initial piece of this story back at Seneca High when Miss Mac made me student director for the play Arsenic and Old Lace. Next, there was a slight crush on actor Andrew McCarthy, which led me to watch Weekend atBernie's. Then my editor told me I was killing off too many of my characters' relatives. "Dead people aren't funny, Holly." So I resurrected a few dead relatives, but really wanted to give her a very funny dead-body book. . .and eureka! All the pieces were there and my story took form.
I had so much fun with this one, I hope you do as well!
2016 PS. Wow, it's been twelve years since I wrote Markie's story. It was so much fun revisiting her. As you read her story, you'll note she doesn't have a cellphone at the beginning of the book. I know, it's hard to imagine now, but twelve years ago, a lot of people didn't. So much has changed since then for me as well. I've written a lot of books since Markie's story. More comedies, a lot of family dramas, and even another mystery series. Yes, Markie came before my bestselling Maid in LA Mysteries, but looking back, I think she pointed me in that direction. I hope you enjoy her story!
