Shimmering adult contemporary pop was alive in the early to mid 90s, and it was even mainstream, if you can believe it. Songs like "Nothing broken but my heart" (Celine), "Missing you now"(Bolton), "By the time this night is over"(Bryson/Kenny G) had the perfect blend of melodic instrumentation and standout vocals. Such is the case with "Can't let go". But Mariah was a cut above the rest; it's as though this genre was made for her. In years to follow, it seems the public placed her in a competition with hip-hop "divas" that was like putting a heavy-weight champion in the ring with schoolboys. Why should she ever have to justify herself with rap-laden one-trick non-wonders when none of them could ever even touch the success that she already had under her belt at that point? A song like "Can't let Go" proves that Carey was already reigning queen, and she needn't box with the court jesters.
