I make it short: This book is really awesome. Since Cantonese is quite difficult to learn, it needs a comprehensive textbook to pick it up. This book provides insights in pronounciation and shows how you can USE the Cantonese from the very beginning.
In my case, I needed eight weeks to get through the book. I was working in Hong Kong that time and I could apply everything I learnt immediately (this is the most important thing). After these two months I could already engage in discussions with my colleagues. The book is a good basis and provides 1.200 words and all the sentence structures you need for normal day talking. It comes with a CD with various dialogues and the spoken vocabulary. It teaches all the grammar you need to know for proper Cantonese and you will learn the pronounciation in a very efficient way.
In my opinion, a good book does not need to have everything as long as those parts are clearly excluded. This book does not provide a guide how to write the characters! However it included all the characters for those who want to have a look. In case you want to learn how to write, you will definitely need another book. The focus of this book is talking and listening Cantonese!
