From the back cover: Cantonese for Everyone, written by an experienced teacher for independent learners and students on taught courses, is practical and easy to use. It is meant for people who have no prior knowledge of Cantonese but have a strong desire to learn and a need to use it as soon as possible. The course offers a step-by-step approach to learning spoken Cantonese. It introduces students to basic characteristics of the Cantonese dialect, the Cantonese phonetic structure, the basic communication skills, commonly used expression in daily situation, and the Hong Kong and Chinese culture. This book uses the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong Cantonese Romanization Scheme (also known as Jyutping) for Cantonese phonetic transcription. There is another version of the book available that uses the Yale Romanization System.

In my case, I needed eight weeks to get through the book. I was working in Hong Kong that time and I could apply everything I learnt immediately (this is the most important thing). After these two months I could already engage in discussions with my colleagues. The book is a good basis and provides 1.200 words and all the sentence structures you need for normal day talking. It comes with a CD with various dialogues and the spoken vocabulary. It teaches all the grammar you need to know for proper Cantonese and you will learn the pronounciation in a very efficient way.
In my opinion, a good book does not need to have everything as long as those parts are clearly excluded. This book does not provide a guide how to write the characters! However it included all the characters for those who want to have a look. In case you want to learn how to write, you will definitely need another book. The focus of this book is talking and listening Cantonese!
