I was a bit skeptical about buying an aftermarket battery grip for my new Canon EOS Rebel T2i (550D in other parts of the world), but since using it I have nothing but good things to say about this part.

I recently took a short vacation to Mt. Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota and had this grip installed for the entire three day trip. I took hundreds of photos and a lot of video. Note also that I'm not an 'old-school' photographer that likes to use the viewfinder but rather prefer to use 'Live View' screen mode which eats the batteries much more quickly. The batteries that came with the grip lasted for the first two days before running low. I had another set and was able to keep on shooting. I also like the included AA battery tray which gives you the option of powering the camera with six AA batteries (which could be a real life saver in a pinch!).

I would rate the feel, fit & finish and quality of this part to be on par with the camera itself. The plastic and grip are nearly identical to the camera. The controls function perfectly and make portrait position photos more comfortable than I've ever experienced. I have large hands and the comfort factor is the biggest reason that I purchased this to begin with as the normal landscape position is more comfortable as well.

Anyone who has picked up the T2i (550D) knows instantly that it's not a heavy camera and actually is a bit on the lightweight side. This grip with two batteries actually improves the balance by adding heft and size which can create a much better user experience.

The only thing I would caution is to consider buying the package with four batteries to allow for change-outs if you don't already have spares.

This battery grip does exactly what it promises to do. It double's your battery time and provides redundant shutter (w/half-press!) and function buttons when you rotate the camera 90 degrees for vertical shots. It provides an excellent grip platform and makes the camera much more comfortable to hold and use with surprisingly little added weight.

Fit and finish are good and blend perfectly with the body of the camera. It even allows you to use AA batteries in a pinch: such as when you find yourself on location and forgot to charge your battery-packs the night before. (Bear in mind, however, that the 6 AA batteries you will need to use give a little less juice than one, fully charged Li-ion battery pack. Plan accordingly.)

Finally, if you shoot any significant quantity of video with the T2i/550D, you will bless the day you made the exceedingly wise decision to buy a grip that double's its battery capacity.

This grip is VERY inexpensive compared to other accessories you are going to find yourself buying and is one of the highest value to cost accessories you can find for your DSLR. Now that you have a T2i/550D, do you self a favor: buy (1) a good, name brand, class-6 SD card in as high a capacity as you can afford, (2) A lens hood, (3) the best fluid head tripod you can afford (for video), (4) a monopod, (5) a good camera bag, and (6) one of these battery grips. After that, you can start spending some real money on lenses, audio recording equipment, green screens, still and video editing software, a faster computer, etc. :)

I'm going to start this review with the bad news - both of the batteries I received with this grip were non-functional. They just wouldn't charge. I took a close look, comparing them to my original Canon battery (and the two better third party batteries I purchased separately from Amazon), and the reason why was clear - a few of the contacts were extremely loose to the point of actually being recessed into the plastic. This in contrast to the OEM battery, with contacts jutting out to "grab" the charger contacts. I tried prying the contacts out a bit but to no avail - they're too tiny and embedded in the plastic. (I wonder if this is actually the problem some people seem to have with third party batteries prematurely losing their charging ability.)

Anyway, so yeah, it's possible my batteries were just defective but given that they were *both* like this and that they weren't so much "broken" as "poorly made", I'm gonna say they're just not good batteries.

Having said that, the batteries are a bonus in this package. There's another version of this same grip floating around on Amazon without the batteries and it's actually more expensive. So, no big whoop. I was hoping to get two free spare batteries, but luckily I had also ordered two more batteries separately at the same time. I suggest you do the same and consider yourself lucky if the batteries you get with the grip work for any length of time. (I would send mine back, but I'm going on a trip in a couple weeks and can't be without the grip.)

The grip itself works great. It's almost criminal what Canon tries to charge for what is basically a hollow plastic tube with some electrical contacts, four buttons and a knob.
