Slavery helped finance the Industrial Revolution in England. Plantation owners, shipbuilders, and merchants connected with the slave trade accumulated vast fortunes that established banks and heavy industry in Europe and expanded the reach of capitalism worldwide. Eric Williams advanced these powerful ideas in Capitalism and Slavery, published in 1944. Years ahead of its time, his profound critique became the foundation for studies of imperialism and economic development. Binding an economic view of history with strong moral argument, Williams's study of the role of slavery in financing the Industrial Revolution refuted traditional ideas of economic and moral progress and firmly established the centrality of the African slave trade in European economic development. He also showed that mature industrial capitalism in turn helped destroy the slave system. Establishing the exploitation of commercial capitalism and its link to racial attitudes, Williams employed a historicist vision that set the tone for future studies.

About the Author

The late Eric Williams was prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 1961 until his death in 1981. Prior to entering politics, he was professor of political and social science at Howard University.

The who is who of the Transatlantic Slave Trade...

Superb book, excellent economic history and outstanding moral history. This book illustrates the economic aspects of the international slave trade and who benefited from it, how did it contribute to capital formation and where did those capitals go. From the Baring and Barclay families to Lord Nelson's wife, Williams examines the slave trade and how Liverpool and later Manchester saw their economies boom while the "African Trade" created a wealth that transformed poor Sailors into great Entrepreneurs and generated a "virtuous circle" known as the Triangular Trade that created new markets for British Products in Africa and the Caribbean ultimately triggering a boost in the local industry that helped create the Industrial Revolution.
Chapter 11 examines the facts behind the Abolitionist Movement and how it was fuelled by interests other than the humanitarian cause of Slaves. It looks at how West Indian monopoly of sugar created pressures for competition and illustrates how abolitionist criticized British treatment of slaves in the West Indies while on the other hand they favoured the booming slave trade with Brazil and other Plantation Economies.

This is an old book (1947) but remains the only one economic study of the place taken by slavery in the development of british capitalism previous to the industrial revolution. A similar study of the North-South differential development in North America has
never even been tried and Williams got enough flack from his own thesis advisors when this study (his doctoral thesis) was finally published. In the days when people are finally trying to understand the role of the slave trade this is a must read and a profoundly engrossing book.

After Europe had gone through the middle or dark ages, famine and disease had killed one third of its population. With Europe being almost entirely resource poor, the credit for Europe's total economic recovery, was evidently at the detriment of Africa's Economy, Culture, and the destruction of entire people's natural ways & right to sovereignty. Europe had to destroy the Africans, the American Indians, Taino Tribes, Carib Tribes, Aztec Indians and others. Smh.. 😕 Hundreds of millions of lives were destroyed, so Europes economy can exist.🌕💎💰💸💳
