Featuring an advanced pump boiler system and two filter choices, the commercial-grade Capresso EC PRO Professional Espresso and Cappuccino Machine is the ideal choice for brewing cafe quality espresso and cappuccino at home. The EC PRO is equipped with two filter options that allow coffee lovers at any skill level to prepare barista-quality espresso. The heavy-duty double spout espresso filter, designed for beginners, is convenient and easy to use, brewing one or two espressos at a time. The filter's sieve helps produce an ideal brew quickly and easily, by creating optimal pressure without having to perfect tamp or grind size. Ideal for expert home brewers and those looking to improve their barista skills, the EC PRO's bottomless espresso filter lets users brew barista style. Unlike the double spout filter sieve, the pressure in this sieve is built up based on grind size and tamp. The bottomless sieve produces a richer, thicker crema and a hotter brew because the espresso has less contact with the surfaces of the portafilter. Customer Service Team # 800-767-3554.
Blonding: A very light colored shot may be an indication that more coffee grounds need to be added to the sieve or the grind is too coarse. Alternatively, a shot that is too dark can mean there is too much coffee grounds in the sieve or the grind is too fine. Use a conical burr grinder and experiment to find the perfect grind.
Under-extraction: Occurs when coffee is weak in taste. It can be too coarsely ground or not enough coffee is packed inside the sieve.
Over-extraction: Occurs when boiler water is too hot. There will be a thin, dark crema and the flavor will be harsh and very strong. Ensure Coffee/Steam switch is in the coffee position and always allow the boiler to cool down after steaming.
Channeling: The shot is not flowing evenly in one central stream and is spurting off to the sides. This is caused by uneven tamping. Be sure to place even pressure on the ground coffee when tamping.
Tiger striping: Are the visual effects of a good extraction. The tiger stripes are formed by the contrasting light and dark colors of the crema flowing down the steam of espresso into the cup.

First off, with this machine and every machine I've used, you have to put a little work into each espresso/coffee drink you make. There is no auto pilot. If you want auto pilot, this is not your machine. This is an entry level/advanced machine. Unlike the Krups, this is of high enough quality build, design and output to use everyday. The handles are well sized and a nice heavy weight! There are two filters included, the bottomless filter and the two cup/beginner filter. It is useful to have two handles, especially because it is suggested you prime the machine each time you use it to bring it up to temperature. You can prime the machine with one handle while you load and tamp the other handle. THIS UNIT DOES INCLUDE an inexpensive but totally functional scoop and tamp. It comes with a pretty good instruction booklet. The water tank in the back is very nicely designed, cleanable..and movable.
The quality of the build is very nice, good looking machine, I would love it if it weighed just a little more, as you do have to brace it sometimes while putting on the handle. I am impressed with the foaming wand, makes VERY fluffy foam. Probably easier to use, and more productive, than even the pro espresso machine I used.
The quality of the espresso is very good and it rivals but does not quite live up to a pro machine. It is rich and not bitter and it is a good temperature. I'm a pretty good packer and I have really yet to get solid crema on the espresso. I am not going to say it's impossible because I haven't experimented with grind variation.
I really like this machine, it gets four stars because of that---but I would have got 5 if the espresso were just a little thicker. I do recommend this machine--because I would not be surprised if it were the best in it's price range. I like its simplicity.
** UPDATE November 19, 2014 almost a year later
Machine is working as good as it did in the beginning. We use it all day everyday--almost totally replaced our drip coffee maker! We are SO satisfied with it and can't really imagine the day without it. Yes, that's coffee addition at its finest! Note: We rarely use the foaming function because we just Don't care for it that much (foam is too time consuming) usually use it with guests who want to be spoiled. For the foam the heating element heats up hotter than for the shot--so not foaming MAY extend the life of the machine. Who knows for sure.
I have both emailed and called Capresso several times over the past weeks to try to get this repaired or replaced under warranty. The phone number on their website took me to voicemail even though the message claimed it was during business hours. No response.
Do not purchase this. What a waste of $220 and a disappointing birthday present for my fiancé.
My only gripes, if you can even call them gripes, are that the drip tray is made of cheapo chrome painted plastic, and that every once in a blue moon some water drips out of the grouphead. Also, I would have liked it if the double basket was not pressurized, and that it was secured with a spring collar like the naked one, instead of those damn notch things. If you try to knock out the grounds from the double basket portafilter, the basket will just fall out of the portafilter, even if the notches are aligned correctly.
Also, the "warming tray" is just bypass heat from the boiler and isn't really going to heat your cups at all. One more little thing is that the holes in the drip tray grate are poorly aligned, would have been better to just for for a straight up grate with lots of holes. Sometimes when purging the water from the boiler when going from steam to brew mode the water will just run off the drip tray and get all over the place.
But the important part is that this machine will make good espresso, and steam milk well, and has a mostly solid construction. And that is really all that matters
