This shield is modern design taken from the Winter Soldier movie, so the picture is not entirely accurate. The star is sliver raised and made up of 5 framed geometric kite shape. The center stripe between the red stripes is silver. There is no white on this shield. Will this work for the older classic Captain America Costume, sure. But it looks great with the more modern costume from the Winter Soldier movie that featured Captain America in the deeper blue uniform. You could paint it if you want, but I do not see need.
Many of the other reviews complained that this isn't a giant Frisbee. Well it's not a giant Frisbee, but it's study enough to be costume shield. It's made out of plastic, that should hold up to cosplay or costume party wear. It isn't designed to take a beating and isn't a toy. So I would not recommend using it as a shield to be hit or thrown. The plastic is somewhat stiff and I would think that it would break pretty easily if abused in cold temperatures. Mine was slightly bent/bowed due to the box it was shipped in. The box was too small and the shield bowed out the sides, causing minor bends in the edge of the shield. Nothing major, more annoying than anything. I doubt anyone but me will notice.
The shield has two elastic straps on the inside to keep it on your arm. They are too small to enable the shield to be worn on your shoulders. But you could mod it if you have the time and desire. I'm thinking about it, because I didn't expect to get it less than 5 days after I ordered it. It would be cool to be able to sling it over my shoulder instead of having it on my arm all night.
Looks great when you first get it... but as soon as you handle it, you can tell just how flimsy it is. The paint looks cool because its got that metallic paint look to it, but it chips off pretty quick. The stripes between the red, silver and blue parts are embossed into the actual design, so if you were to re-paint to re-purpose the shield, those ridges and the star would still be there.
So if you never handle it, and just put it on a wall, its pretty cool... but after a Halloween weekend with this thing, its probably going to end up in the trash.
Made by Disguise, for the Captain America: Winter Soldier movie (2014).
What I don't like about it is the cords in the back to hold up the shield. It'll hold just fine but there is no way for you strap it behind your back unless you attach something to do that. But if you can do that then ho boy it looks good. It's a big shield too so covers a good bit of you.
There's a review here that shows the shield and talks about it. I recommend reading that through and then making your purchase. It did for me.

Firstly I was impressed with its size - its a full 24" accross, which makes it visially very impressive - however in most other aspects the shield appears fairly flimsy and cheap in construction.
The shield is made out of plastic and unfortunately looks like cheap plastic too (I'll be respraying mine to give it a more realistic look), and whilst its relatively rigid, it still flexes quite a bit, and I expect that a stiff breeze might see it wobbling and bending all over the place. The finish on the paint job is fine from a few feet away, but close inspection revealed a little bleeding and paint transfer between the colours.
The straps for the shield are nothing more than two thin pieces of elastic secured by fragile looking plastic brackets, and I'm a little concerned that they might not be tough enough to take a full day at a comic-book convention - certainly I doubt they would take the rigours of child play, if indeed you have purchased this item for your actual children rather than your big kids!
Overall I woukld say that this is an item that just about does the job as far as I'm concerned. Its far from brilliant, but at less than half the price of the cheapest metal replica shield it is probably ideal for most budgets.
However it did cost me £32 including shipping so it wasn't exactly cheap, in fact it was the same price as the actual costume! However it is of a very good size and WAY cheaper than any metal ones I could find anywhere else. Having said that the plastic itself is a tad weak but as long as you're not planning anything extreme to do with it than you should be fine. The straps as well are a little weak however nothing some hot glue or duct tape can't fix!
Overall was really impressed with the product and it looks fantastic with my costume, and although a 12" is more than half the price, this product looks great and I intend to use it for many more years to come. Would recommend :)
It is a little flimsy, especially if you're planning to do battle with the Winter Soldier - but it does have elastic straps on the rear, which I'm guessing would work well for fancy dress etc.
The paint border between the red and silver bands is a little undefined, but overall for the price I think it looks great.
Very happy overall.
