Cap is trying to find his way in an America that has grown strange to him and that has lost its faith in what he stands for. What is the price of standing up for your core beliefs when no one, including the people you are trying to protect, seem to share them anymore? Justice for all, a helping hand for those in need, respect for every class, religion, and culture, that has always been the theme of Captain America. Now the struggle is against brokers of pure power, without morality or responsibility, and the battleground is the hearts of the American people, who have lost the story of who they are and why America matters. Ta Nehisi Coates is distilling Cap down to his most essential and never has there been more at stake.

Having completed his run with Black Panther, Ta-Nehisi Coates, takes his crack at a less obvious choice for his talents, Captain America. If I found this volume a little too heavy on narrative and a little low on action, I enjoyed it a lot overall. The art is serviceable, but not amazing. Where Coates shines as a writer is (a) his development and consideration of personal relations, which is first rate and (b) his focus on Captain America's place within comicbook history and the increasing self-doubt of American society. Coates elides many of the social issues he focuses on in his "adult" work, but nonetheless, allows us to consider, with Cap, the ways the hope and self-confidence of "the Greatest Generation" has been sapped. He highlights the growth of populism along with that self doubt, even while thinking seriously about the cultural and economic dislocation that lies behind it.
This is not to say that the book is sociology; it is a comic book and has its fair share of both goofy premises and butt kicking. But Coates is clearly aiming to give heft to this work. So far, he's succeeded in finding the balance. Here's hoping that he'll keep it going through the run.

"Winter in America" was a solid read as an introduction to Ta-Nehisi Coates run of the fampus Marvel character, with at times pretty good art by Leinil Yu, the late Gerry Anguilan, and company. My only complaint with this is that, while the script carries you thru the book, the art doesn't, and feels very secondary instead of complemetary to the words. Many o Yu's well ilustrated characters are put in little detailed backgrounds, with one stablishing first shot of the location, and then dissapearing background that become gradient colors in many panels. Blame the short deadlines of the monthly books or editorial changes on the script, but made the book feel hollow and rushed in the art department, to the point that it became distracting, and in a comic book, that is a sin, more coming from a team of artists that given the time, have delivered better stuff.

It started interesting but as soon as other characters were introduced it got less so as the story progressed. I thought it was going to be about what defines a patriot, but it became filled with standard action cliches. The story held my interest and the artwork is very impressive.

This TPB Copy of Captain America Vol. 1: Winter in America from Ta-Nehisi Coates which I bought new and is in mint condition is a great and mostly flawless start to Ta-Nehisi Coates 2018- Captain America run and even has some parallels to Ed Brubaker solid 2004-2012 run and also has some surprise along the way and is a great place to start new and longtime readers as well

This run takes place after Secret Empire (which I didn’t read but plan to) so there’s just a little confusion but Coates does a good job clearing stuff up so you don’t get lost. This volume is introducing you to who Cap is now after (spoiler maybe) he becomes himself again and America is confused as to whether they should accept him or not. Nothing too mind-blowing happens in this volume but it was good and I can tell things are gonna get better.

Echoes of current events, reflects discontent and divisions in US now, shows how Cap is literally a symbol of a different age and contrasts his pure patriotism with the trumped up false patriotism we see now

Nothing else to say. But Marvel is dying if this is the kind of stories they want to push on their customers.

All a bit boring to be honest.

I don't know much about the writer tbh, he must be new to comics as it comes across more like some kind of political statement than an actual story, we get enough politics in real life without it infecting comic books.
