These tales are designed to be sampled and savored, not read through as a novel; perfect for a five or ten minute break (some are a bit longer). Each is written as if you are unfamiliar with the series, repeating with glee the descriptions of various characters. Narrator E.M. Carberry romps through them with all the joie-de-vivre and self-important smugness of our hero, gleaming like Captain Quasar's teeth as he strikes his favorite Starfarer pose, then voicing Hank in a convincing growl and giving Bill, the Janitor cum Chief Engineer, a laid back California hipster vibe. The broader your fields of reference, the more Easter eggs you are going to find lurking in the deft prose.
E.M. Carberry performed the audiobook keeping the tone light, energetic and fun! Much like the story, the narrator was appropriately campy as well. How he was able to deliver some of the lines without cracking up, I’m not sure but he was a true professional!
There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.
A wonderful book if you need some fun, campy entertainment. Guaranteed to move you to laughter!
One of the first things he does is to, accidently, imprint himself on a baby alien after treading on it in a darken cave. Then, not long after that, he blows on the belly of a giant kitty, after refusing to carry a Queens eggs to term in his skull...things just get better from there onwards really. These are a just a taste of the bizarre but exciting events that the crew of the Effervescent Magnitude get up to. It's an amazing ride!
I love the four armed helmsman, Hank, who seems long suffering and mostly just says,'humph'. The Captains second in command is Commander Wan, otherwise known to him as 'Number Wan', (that just made me smile) he's such a ham! She is a very stoic, stiff upper lipped type of person, and she seems to spend a fair amount of time saving the captains butt.
This book is filled to the top of the nacelles with short stories and clean comedy. I absolutely love the Captain Quasar vs..stories...they are brilliant!
Everyone on board goes for an unexpected nap and Captain Quasar fails to save the day!
Captain Quasar stries to save the day but he stuns himself, accidently apparently.
The next thing you know, Captain Quasar and Bill, his engineer, are hurtling along on a train filled with explosives, will they survive, you'll have to read it to find out!
The thing about all these short stories, is that they are not long enough, not at all. Each time I read one, I felt sad at the end of it, simply because I wanted more! The stories are brilliant and different and they leave me yearning for more of all of them *sighs*
I shall be looking out for more of the tales of Captain Quasar and his unusual intrepid crew.
Captain Bartholomew Quasar is commander of the Effervescent Magnitude that is sent on an exploratory mission for resources into outer space for a type of quartz. They seem to attract trouble like a magnet though. There is a bounty on him from some spider-like creatures because he and his crew accidentally blew one of their ships out of the sky, killing everyone on board. While trying to dodge them, he gets drawn into an ancient civil war between 2 other civilizations. But, never the daunted, Captain Quasar is confident that his dashing smile (with teeth so sparkling white that are capable of blinding others), his Commander pose (meant to best display his biceps and pecs), and his charming good looks can be used to his best advantage (along with his ship's superior technology) to save the day.
