Unfortunately, some of the chapters don't provide enough depth to really learn the topic at hand, which is where Edwards training is supposed to help you if you purchase it.
Overall decent book, though some of it seems to aim more towards creating intellectual property than sticking with the terms that are already used.
I am not aware of a single book that covers more ground, though single books do a much better job than Edwards does in a chapter.
There is some mention of actual scientific studies (although grossly oversimplified), but she splices in her "Twitter polls" as if they are anything but convenience samples of like-minded subjects who would fall under the demand characteristics confound. Oh, and almost every one of those "polls" has an accompanying image with her handle prominently displayed.
Speaking of, there were MANY mentions of the website and self promotional materials (oddly, EVERY 'tool' was found through the exact same URL). We should expect some self promotion, but this became excessive.
I gave 3 stars because I believe her intent was admirable; attempting to help those in need of social training is something to respect. It just felt very "life coach"-y.
I've been trying to implement the tips/challenges outlined in this book, and I can already see my network slowly growing and my communication skills getting stronger. Highly recommend that you read it closely, and try to do all h.w. type stuff. I don't think I need to tell you there is a big difference between knowing and doing. You want to get in the practice now, not when the relationship stakes are higher.
NOTE: Just as a tip when deciding to purchase the book, the E-book Deluxe version is pretty bad. Formatting is TERRIBLE. Looks like a bootlegged version of the book LOL. And the clips just repeat the lessons in the book. But yeah, the formatting.... Jesus have mercy on it. Avoid e-book until you hear they revised it properly. Returned the E-book and got an actual paperback copy. As of right now 8/7/18, they haven't done anything to fix the e-book.
Her book "Captive" is about explaining the social science that make people tick, and how can you "hack" that social science to your benefit and use it to succeed in your relationships in life.
Two unique points that I think this book has to offer:
First is that the book is written in a very simple and casual way that helps break down complex ideas and make the book to a very fun read.
Second point is that the book includes a lot of ways for active learning, for example the challenges at every end of a chapter and the digital content that's in their site for further information on the subjects in the book.
One downside I noticed in the book is how the success of the people that's presented in the book is linked to one characteristic treat that Vanessa is trying to emphasis in every chapter. I think it’s over-simplifying to claim that one treat lead to their success in life.
Overall I think this is a great book, has some great insights would recommend to anyone who's trying to step up their social skills. Would definitely suggest doing the challenges that are presented in every chapter to fully maximize the book and even doing them for the fun of it!
I love that this is a book that is great to listen to or read, but it has information that you can use on an everyday basis. I have now purchased the written version so I can use it as a quick reference. Thanks Vanessa!

There are chapters on The First Five Minutes, The First Five Hours, and The First Five Days. Some of the useful information includes: starting conversations and making them "sparkle" and memorable for you and the other person; the importance of really listening (I wish there was a section on 'how to cope with people who don't listen and just talk about themselves none stop!); why "birds of a feature stick together"; making "raving introductions"; where to stand at networking events; how to hold your mobile; how to write dating messages; decoding facial expressions and microexpressions; how knowing different personality types can help your friendship and business. There are questionnaires throughout to get you thinking about these.
A quick note - she is American and sometimes uses American Football or other American cultural analogies but only a few. I guess we British are bilingual!
I've known Vanessa's work through her email newsletters for a few years and was looking forward to this book, and was obviously not disappointed - even pleasantly surprised how useful and informative it is. But the one thing that really surprised me was the cover. I know that she really put a lot of effort into designing the cover (with her face on it), but this UK edition has a drab boring cover that doesn't stand out at all - thanks to Penguin. So don't let that put you off it.
This is a great reference book that I'll read again and again for tips and inspiration.
Also, I read this book in preparation for my first major conference. I am an introvert by definition and was feeling anxious about the event, but this book really changed everything for me. I went from "talking to people makes me anxious", to "who can I talk to next?" This book has changed my life. I can now see the value of networking and more importantly, I am now getting the value out of my networking sessions. Thank you thank you thank you Vanessa. I really can't say thank you enough for writing a book for "non-people" persons like me.

It's a sizable book; what you're getting is a pretty comprehensive guide to boosting your social skills, so although pricier than some other books in the same genre it feels fantastic value. As you might expect from someone selling people skills, Vanessa is an engaging writer – providing detail and insight while maintaining an informal and conversational style. There are lots of cues to help you reflect on your own personality and needs as well as simply understanding other people, which is always worthwhile. As someone who is easily bored by small talk, I feel I have had more high-quality conversations over the past week than I can ever remember having before; if that sounds appealing then I encourage you to go ahead and buy the book.
