I loved every second of this book. Vanessa herself is brave, real, and relatable. Her book is insightful, fun, and FULL of so much useful information. Her "conversation sparkers" were my absolute favorite and something I ended up sharing in my book as well (with full credit and permission of course) because I loved them so much. Vanessa is so smart and is always brining fresh ideas to the table. I especially love how brave she is by tackling subjects that most of us fear (networking events, presentations, small talk) then giving us smart ways to work through them. A must read!

If you love psychology and learning about people this is the perfect book. I love psychology and study it for fun and this book was a great read and truly does teach you a good bit. I’m not really a big reader and sometimes struggle reading a bunch at once but with this book I was very entertained and read most of it in one sitting. hope this e-mail finds you well. I am really enjoying the book... Slow reader so just up to the decoding now. The book has really helped me out. I am fairly intellectual so I would always try to showcase myself. I thought I could make friend by showing my value. How wrong was l. I need to show them thier value. I love people, but I would come off arrogant. This eventually lead to me having no friends and a divorce after 20 years (sadly I didn't even see it coming).
However, now am an Uber driver and I can try out your techniques with my snack size friends (I love Fight Club) and it is amazing. I love hearing about peoples lives and we share a bond in the short time together.
I work hard at finding threads and asking why (I have not made it to 5 yet...sorry). It makes for an enjoyable ride for all and I have been asked to hang out afterwards and my tips have increased. But beyond that it has helped make ligit connections, something I always desired, but have done incorrectly (or I found a technique I could eliminate).
I look forward to many friends and a loving family.

I first came across with the works of Vanessa Van Edwards with her YouTube videos and they were great. When later I found out that she had written a book I thought to myself that I had to pick it up.
Her book "Captive" is about explaining the social science that make people tick, and how can you "hack" that social science to your benefit and use it to succeed in your relationships in life.

Two unique points that I think this book has to offer:
First is that the book is written in a very simple and casual way that helps break down complex ideas and make the book to a very fun read.
Second point is that the book includes a lot of ways for active learning, for example the challenges at every end of a chapter and the digital content that's in their site for further information on the subjects in the book.
One downside I noticed in the book is how the success of the people that's presented in the book is linked to one characteristic treat that Vanessa is trying to emphasis in every chapter. I think it’s over-simplifying to claim that one treat lead to their success in life.

Overall I think this is a great book, has some great insights would recommend to anyone who's trying to step up their social skills. Would definitely suggest doing the challenges that are presented in every chapter to fully maximize the book and even doing them for the fun of it!
