I was thrilled to find out that this romantic suspense actually had both romance and suspense. I liked the interactions between the H and h. I liked that there was a cast of supportive characters, rather than being limited to a single best friend or a sibling, as is the case in so many romances.
I also want to point out that most of the readers that scored this book the lowest didn't like the sex and language. As an avid reader of many types of romance genres, I think it's silly to complain about sex scenes when you've chosen to read a romance novel. Maybe those readers stick with the "clean and wholesome" style, there's a whole genre with those types of books. This one has steam and swears - be aware if that's a problem for you. Thankfully, it's not a problem for me and I would certainly recommend this one. In fact, I'm off to read the next in the series right now!
You almost immediately fall for Ryder, especially as his own story unfolds and you find out why he thinks his mother's death is his fault. You also discover why his relationship with his stepmother is so strained and why he has such a close relationship with his stepsister.
As for Josie you wonder what her deal really is. You meet the governor who's waiting to find out if he'll be the next attorney general but you also meet Josie's sister Brittany who has an agenda all her own.
The "bad guys" in this book are almost comical in how they can't seem to "get the job done" when it comes to simply killing someone. However toward the end of the book you will find one of the criminals who is extremely sick and twisted. The scene is not for the faint of heart and while the author did not go into descriptive detail of the crime, you should be able to use your imagination to fill in the blanks.
Take it for the long plane ride or that cross country trip.
