Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Recently the USA Today HEA column interviewed me about Captured by the Cyborg. Here are a couple of Q & As from the interview:

What three things influenced your writing Captured by the Cyborg?
Number one, I fell in love with cyborgs, who to me, represent the ultimate alpha male in that that they have brawn and brains. They are humans (and look fully human) who have been modified with computer and/or machine parts. They're rough, tough warriors--the kind of guys you want on your side when things get dangerous. In most cyborg romances, cyborgs are created by an evil government who enslaves them andforces them to fight. It's a great trope, but I wanted to do something different, which leads to the second part.
Number two, I want to bring romance back into the romance genre. I've read a lot of books where the alpha "hero" is a total jerk, a self-centered a-hole. That's not romantic or sexy to me. I want a hero who is truly heroic. Not perfect, you understand, but who is honorable and who demonstrates that hecares for the heroine. So my heroes are cyberoperatives with a clandestine paramilitary force. The tagline for the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series is "Saving the girl and galaxy one mission at time."
What are they saving the girl and the galaxy from? Well, number three, I was influenced by present day terrorism. Although there are other threats and villains in the series, the main one is Lamis-Odg, a planet of religious terrorists who are seeking to extend their reach in the galaxy. However,in Captured by the Cyborg, the main villain is the ex-lifemate of the heroine.
Which character was the biggest challenge to write and why?
The heroines of this series in general are hard to write because they have to be strong in their own right, yet still need to be in a jam so the hero can swoop in, be all heroic and save the day. You can't rescue someone who doesn't need rescuing!  But readers have modern sensibilities (especially in sci-fi) and the damsel-in-distress isn't a popular trope. So in the series, I try to create strong heroines who have something to offer the world, but who need the hero's assistance with a life-threatening situation.  In Captured with the Cyborg, heroine Illumina is on run after being attacked. She has some pretty special, in-demand abilities that make her the perfect partner for her cyborg hero. (I don't wantto give too much away).

I really enjoyed my second taste of the Cy-Ops series, this time with the action centering on the mysterious moon, Deceptio, and the secret operations beneath. Dale was a fun minor character in the last book, but this stands alone well enough that you don’t need to have read the rest of the series to enjoy it. The best thing about it all for me, though, was how well matched Dale and Illumina became throughout this book. I love a balanced couple and this book delivers nicely.

Dale is a protector. He joined Cy-Ops in the first place because of something terrible that happened to those he cared for, and he had to leave Cy-Ops because he kept caring too much. Now he runs his own spaceship factory hidden deep beneath the surface of Deceptio, and even though he’s getting a little bored and feels the need for some excitement, he stays because his employees are the sort no one else will hire. So when a little mystery named Illumina falls into his lap, it’s no surprise that he feels a strong compulsion to keep her close, even if he is sure she’s lying to him.

Despite one or two occasions of naivety, I liked Illumina. She’s smart and survived some terrible things. She might not be as physically impressive as Dale, but she’s more than a match for him when it counts. I liked how she grew throughout this book, mostly in confidence, and I also liked that she doesn’t do stupid things for the sake of being stupid. She makes informed decisions and does what she needs to in order to survive. I love a smart heroine who acts intelligently.

The story unfolds in an easy way, with a touch of mystery and plenty of secrets before exploding into action. It also helps that there’s plenty of chemistry between the main characters.

I was provided an ARC of Captured by the Cyborg (Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance Book 3) in exchange for an honest review. Have I mentioned that Sci-fi romance is one of my FAVORITE genres? Well, it is and Captured encompasses everything I love about this genre!

Illumina is on the run from a very bad man, and an even more horrible situation. She is recovering from her escape from that man, while running for her life. Then, the opportunity comes to work at the top secret factory below the surface of a moon very few know how to find! Perfect, she can be safe and heal a bit before it’s time to run again. Only thing that might stand in her way is Dale, the Cyborg owner who stirs feelings in her she long thought dead.

Dale is an ex-Cyborg Operations field agent. Think super solider with advanced robotics or cybernetics. He, along with a few others, have a computer in their head to control their cybernetics limbs, but they are still half human, just really big and strong! Like REALLY BIG! Dale sees through Illumina's false story right from the start, but instead of sending her packing, he hires her. Why? Well not only is he completely and utterly attracted to her, but it is innately built into the men chosen as cyborgs to protect. He can tell Illumina is running and hiding, so it alerts all those instincts. He will do what he has to do to keep her safe, even if he has to hold her prisoner.

The story was one that I flew through and read in just a few hours; I absolutely couldn’t put it down once I started! There is the perfect mix of danger, betrayal, action and romance, I absolutely loved every page! I can’t wait to see who gets the next story!...Sara

This was fun to read, a sweet romance with some hot sex, some action, and some violence (I wanted to destroy the bad guy). I loved Dale, such a sweet alpha hero. So not a jerk, just very protective and willing to die for his woman: "F- with Illumina, you deal with me." I liked how smitten he was practically from first glance, how he'd think about her, hoping to see her or run into her. There was quite a bit of story from his POV, and it just made him seem like a sweet, nice guy, a cyborg with a big, tender heart. I liked how big and tough he was, so much taller than the petite heroine.

Illumina was such an interesting alien h. I pictured an almost Lord of the Rings kind of fairy, all silvery and beautiful with the long white-blond hair and silver eyes, with that kind of dazzling, other-world glow. She's scarred, an abused heroine on the run from her evil ex, and Dale was just the cyborg to give her refuge. They were so sweet and sexy together. It took her a bit longer to fall, given her history, but Dale fell right away and wanted to keep her forever. I also liked how, although Illumina was fragile and delicate, she could be tough in her own way and pretty resilient.

I like how the author has set this up for more stories, and surely Carter will have one!
A fun read that went quickly with the action and danger but also delivered a sweet romance with a totally feel-good h/H.

Yes it's the turn of Dale Homme to have his story told and what a corker it is! I was so intrigued by him in the previous book Mated with the Cyborg and to see him in his element running his factory really made my day. Dale might be a cyborg but even he at times needs to rely on others and when a crucial project keeps going awry it's time to recruit experienced programmers to run even more diagnostics . A handful of applicants are brought to Deceptico but straight away the small young woman who looks uncomfortable has trouble written all over her so why does Dale ignore his better judgement and offer her the job? There's just something about Illumina that screams out she is hiding and if danger is following her than Dale is just the cyborg to take charge!
The author has written a story that I didn't want to put down. I loved that Illumina might be small and seemingly delicate but she is a lot stronger and more wily than she realises. She is hiding from someone who really wants to see her dead but she isn't prepared to let others suffer for her. Now Dale is just about everything you want in a romantic hero. Tall, protective and not afraid to go after what he wants and boy did I get the feeling that it was Illumina that he wanted. The poor guy was obsessed but to be fair the chemistry between them is palpable. Yet it's a relationship that never felt rushed and had all the romantic feels I need. This story builds up with a little twist and dare I say a red herring? Yes Ms Bristol has delivered a cyborg romance that mixes in aliens that are most definitely out of this world! I sincerely doubt that any lover of sci fi romance would be disappointed with this story, I know I wasn't .
