The work written by Curtis is significant as he had first hand knowledge and Experience working with Native Americans on the frontier.
Curtis also commanded an authoritative understanding of "Indian Warfare" as he participated in the Battle of Little Big Horn, the Nez Perces Campaign. He purportedly served in various Indian conflicts in New Mexico, Arizona, California, and California.
Curtis was the President of Norwich University for a short time and can found in their records on campus.
