After drawing or sketching on your mixed media pad, you can add water to your paint brush and it will act as water color, allowing you to have a sharp vibrant edge to one part of your design and a muted water color effect to where you moved your brush. I don’t own any water colors so this did a really nice job of providing contrasting effects.

When I bought the Neocolors just a few weeks ago, I didn't get it at first. They just seemed like crayons. But then, I used my Pentel Arts Aquash Water Brush Assorted Tips, Pack of 3 (FRHBFMBP3) . And I fell in love! Unlike my experience with watercolor pencils, the neocolors were easy to blend and covered large areas. With just a bit of water to "melt" them, they looked richer than watercolors I have used, and without any residual "crayon" marks left behind.

Plus, I discovered that both my Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Colored Pencil, Set of 24 Assorted Colors (3597T) AND my Pitt Artist pens easily glide over the washed areas. They look gorgeous together!

I'm so happy I finally found a way to fully enjoy my TV hobby.

But here's the backstory to my review, which you might want to read to understand how I came to these fabulous art supplies:

So I have been hunting for the perfect coloring media for my needs for at least three years. I like to doodle and draw mandalas, etc., and color them in while watching TV. Plus, I have chemical sensitivities. I needed something that was not messy and had no odor! For both of those reasons, gouache, acrylic or oil paints were out of the question. But so were Copic and Prismacolor markers. I also tried Peerless and many other brands of watercolors, but just couldn't get the hang of using them.

I wanted something that would allow layering and could cover large background areas. I have long loved Faber-Castel Pitt Artist Brush Pens (48 Pack), Multicolor . But they dry pretty quickly and aren't great for layering. And I tried watercolor markers, like Tombow Dual Brush Pen Art Markers, Primary, 10-Pack , but couldn't get a lot of coverage and I read they fade easily.

Nothing was quite what I wanted to let me sit on the sofa without worrying about ruining the furniture and provide layers for my Pitt Artist Pens artwork - a combination of convenience, coverage, good light fast ratings, and no odor.

Truly, these Neocolors exceeded all my expectations.

I love these crayons. I bought them along with a water brush set. You can use the brush directly onto the crayon or use the crayon straight to paper and then add water. The crayons blend very well together, creating some beautiful artwork. I use them in adult colouring books. There's a good variety of colours in the set and I will be adding more to my collection. I imagine they will last a very long time too, I have used them in a lot of pictures and they still look brand new.

These are one of my favourite mediums. You can use them thinly with water to get a watercolour like appearance or thickly to look like gouache. The images you can see above were all created using Neocolor 2 thickly with a little water to blend them.
