Caran d’Ache
Use these soft, water-soluble pastels to create beautiful watercolor effects. Simply make a sketch with Neocolor II pastels, then sprinkle it with water and allow the colors to dilute. Use a brush to pick up colors and paint as though with watercolors. You can also draw on moistened paper for a wash and varnish effect. These water-soluble pastels have a high pigment concentration that results in bright, opaque colors, suitable for many techniques on dry or wet paper.

The posted painting is one by Johannes Vloothuis showing the results of this technique in a vignette style painting. Neocolor II is a nice addition to the tools for a pastel artist.
DO NOT USE NEOCOLOR I for pastel under paintings as they are wax based but water resistant.

The tin is awesome, I like using the top to blend colors!
The crayons are creamy wether you use them dry or wet. You can scribble with them and then use a water brush over them, or touch a water brush to the tip and almost create a watercolor effect with them.
I did snap the white crayon in half about a week after I got them, but that was the only one, and I wrote very hard (like I can't use mechanical pencils because I snap the lead). After that happened I went a little easier on them and haven't had any problems. They are about the same width of a crayola crayon.
I'm really happy with the color selection of the 30, my only complaint is that I wish I had gotten a bigger set because they are great!

However, there were a couple issues. Many of the tips were chipped upon delivery. Also, when you pull the first or second tab off, it can remove the name. This can be bad if you record the names of the colors you are using for a project unless you create swatches to help you.

They dissolve really well with water and blend and layer beautifully.

I am rewriting my review to make it easier to read.
I tested the crayons using a 300gsm watercolour paper. You can see the swatching in the enclosed photograph. Starting from the top left corner and going clockwise on each swatch you can see the colour mixed with white crayon, the colour mixed with water and the solid colour as it comes out of the tin.
You will see there are plenty of shades of pink, some brown, several blue and only 2 greens (emerald and yellow green). I do not consider the khaki-coloured light olive a green and neither the cement-coloured olive. None of the provided hues are good for colouring botanicals. I tried to mix the basic colours to create green and you can see the results. Furthermore, there is no red-red - just a scarlet that looks orangey-red.
I drew a flower on another piece of the watercolour paper. Used the darkest hues of pink/purple but the result ended up pale. Additionally, you will see the blue colour had lots of little bits in it. Moreover, the colours seeped through to the back of the page even though I did not use a lot of water, just the water brush to mix the colours. You can see this staining in one of the photos.
I felt disappointed with this expensive product. Still, I tested it further. I used gesso on a mixed media page (250 gsm) and spread it evenly with a palette knife. The surface was smooth to the touch. I let it air dry and then I drew a mimosa flower taking colour from the tip of the crayons. I found mixing the colours to get the hue that would correspond to what I was seeing in the photo difficult and hard work. I also found that you can only lay on so much colour before it starts rejecting it. And you cannot apply white gel pen on top. I had to use some silver ink and some yellow ink to create the moss and the shiny parts of the flower/wood. For the blue background I just rubbed the crayons lightly and brushed them with water. I found they were laying on patchy but at least they showed less of the dark spots, probably because I was able to spread the colour much further due to it being laid on gesso.
Overall, I am not happy with the colours included in this set of 30 crayons and their application over large surfaces. (I prefer using Faber Castell's Gelatos for background colouring as they are easier to use and what you see is what you get.). However, had I been able to walk into a store and test the colours out before purchasing individual crayons, it would have been a different story.
The merchant (Dr Pen UK) and their supplier worked closely with me to resolve my problems. It is heartwarming to see how passionate they are about their product and it is catchy!. I have been using my Neocolors II consistently but in conjunction with other mediums like Dr PH Martin's inks, my watercolour markers and my promarkers. Once you realise their potential and limitations, it is plain sailing after that.

These are the best thing for rescuing traditional watercolours that have gone awry I have ever found. Used dry on Cold Pressed paper you can give a lovely texture to areas that have dried dull and uninteresting and wiped onto a wet brush you can easily restore the little areas of detail that have somehow got lost. Overworked passages can be often swiftly rescued by over-glazing with the minimum of effort.
These have enabled me to turn many of my failed watercolours -that every painter in the medium accumulates- into works I am proud of. (The feeling I have nothing to lose can be hugely liberating on my style I find and the crayon shape encourages a loose approach. )
It is worth making up a full colour chart for yourself, showing them both dry and wetted over a black ink line, as the opacity between colours does vary considerably, as does the wet/dry colour shift. I do rather wish Caran D'Ache provided some more pigment and light fastness information with these wax pastels beyond claiming both to be high. I've not had any problems with them fading yet but as I am very careful to use non-fugitive paint in finished pieces would prefer to know the details.
This said they are not only a joy to use being creamy, intense and wonderfully soluble but also economical, as a little goes a long way and replacement sticks can be bought singly in open stock. They arrived intact, protected with foam sheets and well packed in a good, strong tin. I was pleased to find that the top layer is housed in a solid metal tray too, making it easy to lift out.
If you are wondering why you should spend a lot of money on these, be assured that they are artists qualty aquarelle wax pastels and a world away from kids wax crayons and the cheaper varieties available. (There is some good stuff on Utube where you can see them demonstrated before you decide to buy.)
These are probably my all-time favourite Caran D'Ache product and I am thrilled to get 84 colours to experiment with at a bargain price.
and that the colours can be mixed on a palette too. The tin it comes in is perfect, low profile and keeps them safe. I use the tin to mix colours on too. I Just really wish I had got a bigger set!
