Editorial Reviews

Review

'One of the cleverest and most amusing stories of the year' Punch, 1939, on first publication *'Elizabeth excelled at creating horribly hilarious male characters, and the bone-headed Baron is one of her very best ... The vital ingredient in all her work is fun, and here she is at her most sprightly and irreverent ... The overall effect is as exhilarating as a stiff sea breeze' Kate Saunders --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Caravaners is another beautifully written book by Von Arnim. This one differs from her others books in that it is written in the voice of a man, the dreadfully opinionated German Major, Baron Von Ottringel. He and his much younger, second wife, Edelgard decided to join a small group of other travelers on a month long tour of England. They would be traveling in horse-drawn caravans, similar to common gypsy carts. The Baron would keep a journal. This book is his journal.

The problem is that the Baron, who thinks himself to be the epitome of correctness and virtue, is really just a colossal bore. He continually misreads every situation and every person he encounters. He is confounded by his wife who is becoming far too independent for a woman. And even though the story is narrated by the Baron, the more you read, the more you can sense that the other caravaners are not in agreement with him.

It is just masterfully written. If you are normally a fast reader, you may find yourself having to slow down and read this book carefully. There is so much subtlety in the writing, so much clever dialogue to savor. I absolutely loved this book.

To anyone who is yet to catch up with Elizabeth von Arnim's books, you are missing something really special and The Caravaners is one of her best, along with 'Elizabeth's German Garden', it is a 'must read'. Von Arnim's observations and insights into the human race are very subtle at times, purposely meant to be, as at the time of writing for a woman to be so pointedly bemused by the foibles of men was not really acceptable! Elizabeth was one of many women trapped in an age where her intelligence was not appreciated and fortunately for her she married a rich man, as she was in no way cut out for domestic drudgery. Way ahead of her time intellectually, this is a great read.

von Armin has a voice you cannot mistake, and she uses it so well in The Caravaners. Others have told athe polt so well it isn't necessary to do it again, but if you decide to buy The Caravaners, you will catch yourself grinning braodly, often !
