From Booklist

It’s just another day in the ordinary life of Winnie Parker. Oh, sure, her ex-husband is a famous TV game-show host and her mother is an Oscar-winning actress, but Winnie, a single mom of a teenage daughter, works as a secretary, supports herself and her daughter, and thinks herself unexceptional. Until—for no apparent reason—she is kidnapped by a young man who keeps a seven-foot iguana named “Cookie” as a pet. And then all bets are off, especially when the hapless kidnapper’s master plan starts to unravel, and the reader learns more about his motivation and woefully misguided hopes for the future. Told from multiple points of view—everybody but the iguana is represented—the novel is a darkly humorous and occasionally violent exercise in suspense, and a dramatic exposition of the Stockholm syndrome. Wagman does a nice job of lending her characters psychological depth and creating a fast-paced, readable plot. Now, about that iguana . . . . --Michael Cart

Review

“The Care and Feeding of Exotic Pets tilts on Winnie’s strength. In her, Wagman has constructed a magnetic figure who is easy to root for…The book also benefits from breathless pace and a dialogue-heavy structure that hints at Wagman’s screenwriting experience and keeps the pages turning.”–Los Angeles Times

“…tense and fast-paced.”–Wall Street Journal

“Wagman’s talent for imagery is well served by the subject matter, and the story is perfectly paced, with humorous breaks in the tension. A PEN Center USA Award winner (for Spontaneous), Wagman has crafted an unusual thriller for psychological crime devotees and fans of the peculiar.”–Publishers Weekly

“Wagman’s (Bump; Spontaneous; Skin Deep) fourth novel shines is in its complex character development. She gives readers an in-depth, realistic look at the psychological factors motivating her characters, from the shallowness of the celebrities to the insecurities of the teenagers.”–Library Journal

“Wagman has crafted a dark, funny and sensitive thriller that might be the first of its kind: the Oedipal abduction tale.”–Book Page

“Dark, absurd and hysterically funny.”–LA Magazine

Quintessential L.A. novel. Finely etched characters and well constructed plot. This novel is a wild ride but a razor sharp and authentic exploration of family dynamics is larded throughout. Completely defies the adage that there's nothing new under the sun. A wonderful addition to Wagman's terrific catalog of L.A. novels.

Diana Wagman has written another original, quirky, interesting novel, her 4th or 5th, each clearly developing her most individual style, in this well crafted contribution to LA Noir, although thank goodness there are no cynical boozing broad-hungry world-weary detectives in it. (Been there, done that) Instead, there is Cookie, who is very well worth meeting, around whom the story and other characters revolves though not in the way one might think. Terrific read.

The author can never decide if this novel is a comedy or a drama. As the main character is kidnapped, beaten, knifed, and bitten, the author's tone remains light -- so the reader can never decide whether to take the story seriously or not. The giant iguana is a major part of the story, yet not really connected in any organic way to the plot. Two stars for the somewhat Updikean depiction of the ex-husband who is still infatuated with the sexy young second wife, yet misses the more solid, messier life he shared with his first wife and their daughter -- the only nuanced aspect of the novel.

Whoosh! A fast, rough and exhilarating ride-- suspenseful and occasionally terrifying but with a real mordant wit. Wagman perfectly limns the various communities of Los Angeles and its sad, deluded denizens; she's so spot on that you feel that the horrifying things that happen could actually have taken place. What I love most about our captured heroine is that she never gives up, never stops fighting; she is certainly a victim but never acts like one, yet, little by little, you see her relationship with her kidnapper change in recognizably calamitous ways.

An amusing and thrilling tale of how we see ourselves and lead others to see us through the anonymity of the internet. A teen's casual on-line tall tale leads to a stalker, a kidnapping, an encounter with a abnormally large iguana and a cat and mouse game for life or death.

Very clever and intriguing. Along the way we learn about mother-daughter dynamics, reptiles for pets, exotic animal smuggling, and the consequences of things left unsaid. In the end, it's all about the human condition and the power of love, real, imagined, or for another species.

Having just finished this novel, I am left quite perplexed. This book couldn't decide which it was: a jaunty little kidnapping romp or a macabre tale that keeps getting more bloody. And because I don't know if I am left feeling lighthearted or horrified and sad, I say this is a failed novel. I agree with other reviewers that the writing is good and keeps you turning the page but that doesn't make up for the less than satisfying story.

This book was a real page turner, fast paced and gripping. The plot had some originality, and the characters were real and complex enough to make the reader care what happened to them. The events were truly horrific, and it was a little hard to believe that the narrator could survive all that happened. It was a book I hurried to finish, not one to savor exactly, but once started it would be hard to put down.

I downloaded the book because the blurb sounded interesting. I found the characters, especially Winnie and Ormen, believable. But the story ran out of steam at the end. I felt cheated. I knew how the conflict would be resolved early on, but I was hoping for more after that.
