When her own daughter started puberty, she realized there was no company dedicated to making this decade of life more comfortable….so she started one. When her son entered puberty, she realized that there was even less puberty content and product aimed at males… so she decided to fix that, too.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2014I give this 5 stars for helping me communicate with my boyfriend's 8 and 10 year old girls. They don't have a mother, and every girl needs a special someone to turn to in order to understand and not fear the changes they're going through and will go through (just around the corner). Little did I know that this book is by the American Girl Label, and both her and her younger sister love American Girl. It was immediately accepted as a "book of gold". I expressed to her that I am absolutely here for ANYTHING, ANYTIME she needs/wants to talk. She's got a wonderful father, but sometimes it takes an understanding woman available in order to keep the communication lines open and confusing changes in your body to be less feared and better understood. We've had the "period" talk, which went much smoother than I thought it would, thanks to this book. It appears that she is developing early, so it was a wise investment purchased not a moment too soon. She's now confident in talking to me about everything; and she's asking for the next books and journal for Christmas 2014. I'm happy to oblige.
I'm very grateful for the bond that I have with both girls. Now, her younger sister is reading the book and is more open to asking questions also.
This book opened the door to a stronger, more trusting relationship that would not have been as easy without this book. *Just a tip: read the book yourself. That way, any questions you are asked can be better planned for, and questions better understood. Plus, it's just best to understand what they are learning and the details. When I'm shown a page in the book and asked "What does this part mean?", I know exactly what they've read and how to comfortably answer it in a way that they can understand.
The best thing about this book is that it teaches girls what they need to know and understand at the age they are at. At 10, I started my monthly cycle. I was early, but I had no one to talk to. I only had a library full of books that informed me, but they also terrified me. I wasn't old enough to learn about subjects attached to you're period, such as details about sex. That's one thing I hoped to eliminate with this book. Yes, it does explain what a period is and why, but it does NOT explain sex or pregnancy. At 10 (the younger is 8), I can trust that this book won't terrify them like I was. The "sex talk" will happen when she's old enough to know. Some people believe in terrifying their child because it scares them into abstinence, but I'm not that type of parent. I encourage good choices based on information given to them in a way that encourages those positive choices. This book is an excellent tool for that.
I recommend this book to any mother, step mother or parental figure that wishes to have a stronger bond and open communication with every little girl/young lady in their lives. It's truly helpful, and we're all grateful for it!!
Thank you, American Girl, for helping the girls in my home to better understand themselves, and feel comfortable communicating their questions and any fears they may have. Book #2, and the journal out of the line of books/journals available will be making their way under the tree this Christmas.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2022What on earth is happening out there moms? If your sweet summer child is happy discussing her body changes/functions with you and has goddess-like self esteem then no, dear, this book isnt for you. Yes this book discuss proper eating and healthy weight because her future depends on taking care of herself by making good food choices. Diet? Well sometimes we need to cut out junk food and be careful not to binge eat. If you do not like certain parts of the book then by all means skip it but do not get on Amazon and bash this book. Is it that serious? Are you not sitting down with your child and reading this together? This is important stuff, so no your child should not "surprise" or "shock" you with something they have read alone without you there to guide them. This is no cartoon book about puppies for crackers sake, its about body changes so please do not toss it to your kid and make it their issue to figure out. This book will be read with my little girl on a mom/daughter trip. Make the time to sit down with your child. I have already thumbed through it and this book covers EVERYTHING that I would want to discuss. So, here is what its like trying to discuss breasts with my 9 year old daughter:
"Hey babylove I bought you some bras"
"um why?"
"well love, you are growing and this is part of becoming a young woman"
"no thanks"
"well, theres some movement up top and you are very ......developed and this will help with support"
"ugh....ok who cares?"
So, yall buy the book, some of us need help articulating why this matters. My child has under arm hair but refuses deoderant and only wipes when she remebers because she has three teen brothers and is too busy playing in the dirt and catching frogs like they used too. I need a little help because when I discuss lady things with my tom-boy, she dismisses it. Yes there are negative reviews but if a book sets you off, then you may need to head on over to the Disney section and type in the words: LET IT GO!

Paolo PelloniReviewed in Italy on December 16, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo
Charlie Alpha JulietReviewed in Japan on September 3, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Very informative for those feeling a little awkward talking about this.
My daughter is an avid reader and very verbal, but there are some things she was not comfortable talking to me about, so we got her this. She has found it very informative, and reassuring and given her confidence to ask more focused and specific questions. I would buy the next one too - if only there were one for the younger boys!
EmmaReviewed in Australia on January 21, 20255.0 out of 5 stars This is amazing for neurodiverse girls
This is a fantasitc book for children with neurodiversities. My daughter has autism, adhd, learning disabilities and this book is engaging for her.
ViktoriaReviewed in Germany on October 12, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for 7-9 years old.
This is a good book for preteen. I bought it for my 9year old and I'm happy with this book being so childish still since her sister (5) will want to read and see it too. It has a bit information on everything (not sex) simple and short for that age. However this is just for the beginning i will get eventually a more informative one.

WShopperReviewed in Mexico on September 7, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Excelente libro para niñas pre pubertad
