*Book Purpose: To increase career practitioners' awareness of transition issues and resources specific to veterans with examples of how they might walk a veteran through the career planning process. *Summary of Content: This book is mainly for Career Practitioners and strives through the use of case studies to show ways to help Veterans make a successful transition from their military career to one in the civilian work force. Veterans have many problems unique to their service and experience, especially with the increased exposure to multiple deployments and violence. Further they find that lack of support from Family and friends and understanding of what the Veteran is facing exacerbates the transition. Often this experience makes this transition much more difficult and may require the use of outside counselors including the Veteran's Administration and other Social Services. The case studies tell the stories of various military individuals and the experiences they faced during their career in the military and while making the transition. The authors offered several methods to use in evaluating each case. These included "Schlossberg's 4-S Transition Model" and various "Career Theories". Also included a very good list of resources practitioners could find useful in facing the various situations. These included websites and local and governmental agencies.
*The most useful information included the case studies, each of which tried to highlight an experience or conditions various Veterans faced during the transition. Reading these and having this book on your bookshelf may serve to jog one's memory when faced with a similar case. The list of resources will be very valuable, as often, it is difficult to know where to turn when faced with a situation.
The book was very interesting and valuable. I did not find as much use with the various methods as the authors as most of the results seemed self-explanatory, listing the results in accordance with the particular method in charts after the case study. While the results were useful, the book did not go into detail as to how these methods are supposed to work, depending, I think, on previous education and experience with these methods. If the book is limited to this particular audience, other audiences that might benefit from this volume may never pick this up and that is a shame. There also was great emphasis on obtaining the individuals DD-214 to use in writing the resume. While this is certainly useful, it is not the ultimate resource, as it is cryptic and full of military language.
