My favorite part of the book was the 10% strategies (like saving 10% of your income). This is the idea of paying yourself first. This struck me as a very easy, yet very high-paying way to utilize some extra hours I have on the bus going back and forth to work. First, I gave myself the time to actually think about my career rather than ride the wild wave. Then I chose two of those items to implement and set a date in the future to refresh the list. I also liked the "managing stress" section of the book as well. Being in IT, I have to remember if I stress out then I'm not going to function to the top of my ability. I can give myself some time during the day and take a walk around the building or pat the dog.
This book is very useful and I recommend it (and Denise) highly.
Denise Kalm's book covers a multidude of situations with specific examples and recommendations for action. This book can be used by managers and individual contributors as a reference manual for one career or several.
Recommended reading for anyone in the workforce who wants to enhance their life through career modification.
She asks powerful and significant questions like what is your distinctive competence. The author's writing style is clean, to-the-point and provocative!
We plan our businesses, not ourselves. Hence, the first section for personal brand development focuses you squarely on how to build your professional persona. Subsequent chapters provide excellent questions and suggestions for balance, stress, finances, and personal care, to name a few. The chapter, a Reality Check on Your Career is the most practical and needed advice that I've read in a long time. Kudos to this author for her valuable information presented through innovative approaches in how you perceive and also influence perception.
Section 2--Working Well with Others doesn't disappoint. Clearly-stated value like the chapter, Building Influence, not Authority, is an excellent read explaining that your power of influence is far more valuable than your skills. By understanding people better, you can meet your goals, and practice specific skills like the power of silence, mastered so well that you are the consummate listener. Another truth is you must learn how to skillfully promote yourself if you want to survive, and Ms. Kalm tells you how to do so gracefully and ethically.
The final sections, consistent with the beginning of developing your personal brand, continue with instruction on personal branding through technology.
Such an easy to use guide - the author consistently present savvy suggestions... practical-personal-perceptive know-how about you and how your create your brand personally and professionally, by becoming the best represeantation of your brand - the perfect you!
Some of my take-away truths were
When in a rut, digger deeper.
Find your purpose...in everything
Reinvent yourself, not the world.
Are you on the journey of your life?
Are you visible, viable and valuable?
My Evaluation: A purposeful book. A practical book. A personal book to being savvy in all areas of your life. Highly recommended!
