SO! If you get this coat throw that mug in the washer and fill it with warm water. Put in a cup of vinegar. Let it soak for hours. Rinse. Do it again. Do it again. Then put it in the dryer with a couple sneakers and let it run and run. That shrunk it up almost perfect and the hood could lay down. Now it just needs about a year of real wear. Don't do this if you like the poof or need the poof- because it really shrunk up a couple inches in the trunk. The sleeves and waist stayed pretty good, but getting the tall helped with that.
Now I love this coat and will probably have it for the rest of my life. I just wanted to let people know don't freak out when you get it out of the box and it feels like a pizza box.
I returned this coat and purchased the j140 medium tall and I love the fit!!!! It comes down covering my pants pockets which I prefer. When I lift my arms in the j140 my belly is not exposed and in this coat listed the Yukon active j133 it would lift me shirt and expose my belly even lifting one arm vertically. Really hope Carhartt choses to make this coat in a Medium tall as I will buy it in addition to my current j140 for wet weather days!
I still stayed for the most part warm though. Kinda like a hoody on a cold fall day. It was raining a lot but mild rain and it held up decent. It took a while after about an hour or so I felt the back of my shirt have a little moist wetness on it but really it wasn't that bad. It is a little stiff when brand new but not a big deal. Other than the jacket being a little larger and puffy-er than expected(needed to keep you warm)
It unfortunately does not make a good causal jacket to wear to hang out with friends or go to a bar in the chillful winters if you do. I would recommend the Carhartt j141 as I tried it out in the store. This jacket should only be used for work and snow removal and anything where you are outside in the cold for a very long time. I will try it out few more times and decide if I want to keep it, or buy another Carhartt that is warm and good for using in casual areas like bar hopping in boston.. etc.etc. It is nice to have that for a warm jacket but not exactly a rain coat. I will see how it does in just pure snow. I am willing to bet the snow will still soak though due to your body heat and thus causing it to seep though again. I was sure it wasn't sweat cause I felt the inside lining and it was moist all around the jacket.
Everyone is right about the hood too. It doesn't really stay down. I am sure once it gets more washes in hot water and a hot tumble dry it will be better. The Zipper is also a little tough at first but you got to break it in. Wish it had more of neck protection and better string pulls for the hood. Other than that. It is a really good jacket. Recommend for anyone that does very cold work. Or goes to football games in the harsh weather where you don't feel like layering.
