I ended up washing the jacket and throwing it in the dyer at medium heat for 1 hour, and it made a world of a difference in fit!
watched many hockey games in Canada, and Northern NY. Cut wood worked out doors all winter worked on snow making and ice rinks with them. When cuffs get frozen they fray and go to a worn out rag look. Yes they fade and loose a lot of there water repellent and wind resistance ability with every washing. But I do not think there is another coat as tough. Buy large and wear allot of under garments when it is real tough out side.
I wear a XX t-shirt.
I'm writing this to give an Excellent idea of how to pick one for your size.
I'm 5' 11'' 235lbs. Good size shoulders and a little belly action goin on. 46'' chest and 41'' waist.
Extra Large Regular fits perfect. A little loose and comfortable. The way a coat or jacket should fit. Zipped up there's room for three fingers side by side, so it's not tight or baggy around my neck.. O, I have an 18.5'' neck size. My Extra large Regular fits PERFECT.
The quality now. Outstanding! I'm in the Carson City Reno area. So it gets into the teens and single digits for sure. Incredibly comfortable with roomy pockets. Zipper and Velcro. Rugged and good looking coat. Great for going out or toughing it in the forest, mountains, camping, hiking etc...
I love this coat, it's my second Carhartt. I have the J141 jacket I bought 2 years ago. Love it as well. The jacket is in the high end of the mid warmth range.
I bought this coat because it's in the high end of the warmest range. And it does not disappoint. Super Warm and comfortable for the extreme weather.
Ok, my novel is over. I hope this helps with the sizing issues/confirms the True Quality of Cahartt.
5 Stars across the board.
Tough and rugged, as you would expect a Carhartt jacket to be
It is warm coat
It fits nicely when standing up and moving around
The quality and durability are superb
Due to it's relatively rigid structure, it is bulky when sitting, especially in a vehicle. When getting into my vehicle the back has wanted to ride up on me and I've had to pull it down so that it wasn't riding up around my ears. This has diminished since it was new.
The drawstring around the waist doesn't seem to accomplish much and wind can still blow right up it pretty easily (I'm comparing to the longer length snowboarding style jackets I'm used to wearing)
A con for me is that the jacket comes with woven wrist cuffs. This is good in that it keeps wind and debris from getting into your sleeves, but I find it uncomfortable, and I was surprised to find it in there because it doesn't make into any of the pictures of the product since they are actually a good ways up into the sleeve.
Actually the warmest winter clothing he ever had was his blue snowsuit from 1970
First off, you need to order a size smaller than you normally wear for the it to fit you in the torso. I'm 5'11" and 165 lbs and I was wearing a small. However in doing this the sleeves become short (ending about 3 inches above your wrist). This might not be so bad except for the elastic cuffs (not pictured on listing) that are inside the outer cuffs, which kept messing with my watch.
Second, the sleeves are extremely wide/large (best words for it). If you are looking for something semi-form fitting, and you don't have biceps larger than your thighs it just looks strange. I'm sure it was made this way to accommodate layers of clothes underneath, but in my case I just felt like I was 12 years old wearing my dad's jacket.
Again, wanted to like it but after trying 2 of them in different sizes I went another direction.
