After using these gloves a dozen times while raking grain, the stitching on many of the reinforced areas on the palms and fingers has given out. Without the stitching those pads (they're really just thin patches of a more durable and grippy material than the underlying gloves) are detaching and it's probably just a matter of a few more uses before the gloves are worn through. The issue is the stitching alone - the material that forms the pads doesn't seem worn at all, but that doesn't matter if it's falling off the glove! This is a bummer in particular because the backs of the gloves are as good as new, and the rubber ridges which protect your knuckles are quite effective given how lightweight they are. But the first purpose of gloves is to protect your palms, so with that failing so quickly all the plusses may as well not exist. In short, don't buy these unless you literally expect to throw them away after a few uses.
The XL size fits my above average sized hands well and does not cut into the webbing between my fingers.
No complaints so far.
EDIT/UPDATE - After using these gloves here and there over the last couple months I had to add to this review.
The cloth around the thumb is kind of strange. Almost like sweatpants. Not very heavy duty like the rest of the glove. I am sure this is for flex and freedom of movement but it feels kind of cheap or weak, like it might tear. I think there has to be a better design for durability that still allows movement.
Also, the finger tips are not the greatest. It is hard to do fine control tasks. They are clumsy and bulky in the finger tips. I realize these are heavy duty work gloves, but I think a better middle-ground could be made between durability and senstivity.
I like the areas of the gloves that do flex (except the thumbs fabric), but I am not sure why Carhartt did not do something better with the finger tips. The whole point of spandex would seem to be comfort and dexterity. So why not make the finers better for fine control?
All in all, still a decent pair of work gloves, but I had to remove a star.
They have held up in the brush using a machete, hatchet, small axe, and gas string trimmer. For smaller or finer outdoor work I have a nice pair of leather gloves, but these do very well in a brutal environment.
They protect against most stickers and thorns, but didn't work against the tips of a bayonet palm. But then the only thing that works on a bayonet palm is metal armor, a chainsaw, and fire. ;)
These gloves are not insulated, consequently they won't do well in cold weather, motorcycle driving, or wet conditions. But the work well in every other environment.
