I am a podiatrist, so I know feet. Cotton, when wet, stays wet, and irritates the skin until you take the sock off. Wool wicks moisture away from the body. It keeps you warm in the cold and cool in the heat. These socks have stood up (sorry) to repeated use and washing on high heat in the drier and each time, they're like new, holding their perfectly balanced elastic with no signs of wear whatsoever. There is a slightly thick seam just over the toes and if you aren't careful and this seam moves to the side, I find it irritates either the 5th or 1st toe. But with a modicum of care that literally takes one second, this can be easily avoided.
I can't imagine buying any different sock now. Ever.
First issue was that the socks were much too tight. I don't mind a snug sock - in fact I'd prefer it to having those I have to constantly pull up - but these were uncomfortably tight all the way around - especially on my feet. The feel was nice, very reminiscent of the usual all-cottons.
I didn't have any immediate sense that my feet could breathe through these. Personally I don't like a sock that doesn't breathe.
While wearing them I didn't notice the tightness as much as I did when I first put them on... but when taking them off my feet felt immediately relieved from the pressure. I wore them a couple more times, and each time I found myself dreading to put them on, which is no good when you need to wear them daily.
Truth be told I didn't wear them longer than a few days, so I can't speak first-hand on the durability. If I'm to attempt to guess from my short experience: they seem well-reinforced when worn ( and very sturdy when pulling on them), and for those who need them for work (steel-toed boots especially) these probably offer good support for your ankles as well as in the heel and toe. Again, I'm only basing this after a couple of days wear.
During wear, these felt much thicker than they look but they're actually no thicker than the usual all-cottons.
In comparison to the Wigwam At Work socks, the wigwams win, resoundingly. Breathable, light, extremely durable, and snug but not tight. While the Wigwams are a little more scratchy feeling, I recommend the Wigwams over these any day.
GRADUATED COMPRESSION TOPS
When you first see these socks you might think they will always be falling down. They don't ... they stay up on your calves very well without being tight.
The elastic instep is designed to support the arch of your foot. Because of the elastic instep, the foot of the sock appears small. The foot of the sock is quite comfortable when the sock is on. The elastic instep has a down side ... you must work to put the socks on. They are not a quick pull-on sock.
These are quality socks that are comfortable to wear all day long. They wash well with minimal fading and the socks maintain their shape and elasticity.
I paid $16.00 for a 3-pack on June 10, 2014.
I will buy these socks again if I don't find different socks that are of the same (or better) quality that are easier to put on. These socks present a challenge to my arthritic hands and fingers.
