So in this case it would be somewhat small so I went up a couple of sizes.
It turns out to be slightly small, but not enough for me to return it.
Did NOT fit, so had to send it back and ordered a larger size 42, hope that one fits.

I live in snow country where we get 200-250 inches of the stuff annually and bought these coveralls a month ago, primarily, to wear when shoveling snow or using the snowblower. The Carhartts are comfortable, easy enough to don and have enough zippers to adjust for conditions -- closed when the wind is blowing and open for ventilation when necessary (yes, one can overheat even at well below zero). The coveralls are reasonably wind resistant; an important feature. I have worn them without discomfort when stringing Christmas lights (on a ladder) and when doing a variety of other tasks and feel that they will also be comfortable when snowshoeing. I did look at similar products from other companies and believe the quality of materials and construction is superior. And, it is Made in the U.S.A. As I have only had these overalls for a month or so, I can not speak for their durability, but have no reservations that they will give years of good service -- will update if I find otherwise.
I am very pleased with the purchase. You might wish to buy a size or two larger than normal to accommodate an extra layer of clothes -- follow Carhartt guidelines.
UPDATE: April 11, 2013. After a long winter which still hasn't quit, I've given these a bigger workout than I planned on. I learned to wear just a t-shirt or a light shirt to keep from overheating. The side and leg zippers are usually left open for ventilation except in high winds, again to keep from overheating when snow shoveling. For less strenuous situations the zips can be closed. Full freedom of movement during all sorts of activity. So glad I didn't try to save a buck or two by buying one of the lesser quality imports. CARHARTT is MADE IN THE USA.

COVERALL SIZE CHARTS is not your waist size
Here is the Carhartt Sizing instruction:

    1) CHEST MESURMENT; Measure in inches just under arms and across shoulder blades holding the tape firm and level.

    2) MUST BE EVEN NUMBER: If your measurement is an odd number or in between size: GO UP to the next EVEN size.

    EXAMPLE:
Chest measuring tape size is 39” = your number is 40,
Chest measuring tape size is 38.5” = your number is 40,
Chest measuring tape size is 40” your number is 40.

    3) ADD + 4 TO YOUR NUMBER IF WORN ALONE
ADD + 6 TO NUMBER IF WORN OVER OTHER CLOTHES

Ex: your number is 38, buy size 42, if worn alone [38+4],
Or buy size 44 if worn over other clothing [38+6].

    FOR LENGHT:

BUY SHORT if your height is: 5’3” to 5’7”
BUY REGULAR if your height is: 5’7” to 5’11”
BUY TALL if your height is: 5’11 to 6’3”

This is the precise Carhartt measurement for a proper fit. Coverall does not have a waistline and are measured by chest size as mentioned above.
These are great quality – American made coverall and has a super strong zipper.

Sizing was as charts suggested, product is what you expect from Carhartt. If you are under 5'-10" you might want to consider the short model since this one is very close to touching the ground.

Carhartts are a great brand, but the sizing guide was way off. I bought my hubs, who is a size 38-40, a size 44 per the guide. He couldn't get them past his hips. If you are in the market for coveralls-go big!

My son felt like a super star, he is a truck driver and was really happy with fit. I paid attention to the reviews, which said order big, they fit small, such good advice, thank you previous reviewers for that info. I ordered 2 sizes bigger and it was p e r f e c t.

Bought this for my boyfriend as he works in construction. We had NO IDEA how to order it size wise due to all of the feedback left on fitting, my advice READ ALL THE COMMENTS UNTIL YOU FIND SOMEONE WHO DESCRIBES THE SAME PHYSIQUE YOU'RE DRESSING AND ORDER THE SIZE THEY DID! Seriously, I spent about an hour reading but it was well worth it because boy even with our size up guesstimate we were way off. He's just under 6ft about 180lbs. Normally a 32 or 34 waist in pants ( and even that is a bit baggy) so we were going to order a size 38 or 40. Glad I researched, wound up buying a size 46 and it fit perfectly. Seriously, when they say size up, SIZE WAY WAY UP. We probably could have gotten away with a 44 but at least with this he can still fit sweat pants or hoodies and jeans under this for extra layers. Other than that he loves it and I'm much happier knowing he's warm!

Bought a coverall for my husband for his birthday. He said it was so warm he could wear it over just his thermals and stay comfortable while working outside. He wears size 34 waist jeans and is about 5'7" and he found the size 44 Regular fit great.

I am 5' - 10" and weigh 180 lbs. I purchased a size 46 (brown) based on a previous review. Washed them once before wearing for the first time. The center zipper hesitates a bit about belly high but I suspect that will work itself out the more I wear the coveralls. I wear a pair of light thermal pants and either a short or long sleeve tee shirt under the coveralls. Last week temps started in the high 20's to low 30's here and got into the low/mid 40's. I was comfortable outside all day without needing to supplement my under clothing. The side zippers worked great as ventilation as the temperatures rose. There will be enough room under the coveralls for sweats or other thicker clothing without sacrificing comfort and movement. Look through the reviews for references to height and weight and use those as a guide for sizing.
