Product Description
New formula for enhanced root development. Why does Eco-Complete planted aquarium substrate outperform other products? For the same reason that Hawaii, Bali and Costa Rica are famous for lush, exuberant plant growth. The secret lies in rich basaltic volcanic soil which contains iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfur plus over 25 other elements to nourish your aquatic plants. Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate is mineralogically and biologically complete, giving you luxuriant aquatic plant growth without nuisance algae. Iron rich Eco-Complete eliminates the need for laterite. No artificial dyes, paints, or chemical coatings. Eco-Complete has highly porous spherical grains for optimum diffusion performance and contains live Heterotrophic bacteria to rapidly convert fish waste into natural food for your aquatic plants. It establishes a natural biological balance which makes cycling a new aquarium faster and safer. Directions: Add Eco-Complete to empty aquarium, then add water, plants, start all filters and pumps. If adding to an existing tank, mix in a few pounds a day over a period of a week or more.

One month after replacing my shrimp substrate with CaribSea, I continue to be amazed with the new growth of my plants and bright coloring of my shrimp! By far the easiest substrate I’ve worked with. NO rinsing! Seriously, I think I’ve lost hours and hours of my life rinsing Seachem Fluorite :(
Over the moon to finally be having some success with live plants! Thanks CaribSea!

This soil has really done the trick for my tanks honestly, it adds all the necessary compounds and bacteria the aquarium needs, and it's not hard on any of the fish or Shrimps or even snails in the tank.
I've seen many a complaint about " This raised the PH so much my fish died" It had parasites in it " it had other material then the black rocks in it.
People.. People.. Seriously if you are buying soil for your tank that naturally helps aid plant growth and survival. you had to have done SOME research on plants and what that growth needs.
The Parasites and Planaria, A Shell less snail thats wonderful for keeping fish waste to a minimum and The natural compounds in fish waste is absorbed and dumped by these snails in a less harmful, more helpful bacterial form for the plants. They won't leach onto your fish or lay eggs in their brain.they are no different then shelled snails. and they will help your tank..
The other rock is minerals in large clumps ,being the cause of your fishes death? NO mineral in any rock form is strong enough to kill a healthy fish. There was something else wrong with your fish long before that chunk of sulfur came to be.. Instead of blaming a soil thats wonderful in every way possible for your fish to the point it cant even hurt a snail without shells. Go ask yourself where you got your fish from. What water changes you've done. Research if it's right or the place is good.. No mineral on earth can not kill a PLanaria but kill a African cichlid.
the PH will be higher because of the Active Bacterium and composed matter you added to your tank, the same would happen when you add Leafzone or Plant fertilizer. You just blame the raise of PH on the death of your fish because you don't want to think about who the real culprit is. It's been proven again and again in history that nature doesn't supply ponds or rivers with the PERFECT PH all the time. Summer can be 5.5 in the morning, rain, and become 8.2 by the time the rain stops.. These animals are build to survive PH dramatically changing in the way of adding bacterium and plantlife.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with this medium. Drain your bag properly. Use a cup if it's being installed in a already cycled tank. Or pour right in before the water on a new one. It's Not going to harm anybody but your fish if you pass this up for some petco Seagen crap Oo. Do whats right for the animal. Not what YOU want.
And thank you CaribSea :D This is wonderful!

TL;DR: Good dirt, fish and plants love it. Expensive. Have some Prime and Zeolite for ammonia leaks.
Pros: Contains great nutrients for plant growth
looks great
isn't sharp (doesn't hurt my corydoras)
comes packaged in water/conditioner already so no need to wash which makes it very easy to use, just dump it in the tank as is
Cons: the water it was packaged in was FREEZING COLD, so I could not add the water to the tank. I have no idea if the water had nutrients or if I was supposed to leave the water out, but I didn't like the idea of putting random different water in my tank anyway. I just scooped it out with my hands instead.
It is known to leach small amounts of ammonia into the tank for a while afterwards. I did have an ammonia spike of about 0.2ppm but I am not sure if it was from the eco complete or from the new plants (new plants tend to die off a bit, so they can also cause ammonia spikes). I added some zeolite to my filter and the ammonia went away very quickly. I recommend having some on hand just in case, as well as Seachem's Prime conditioner.
It is decently expensive.
And my last point, which isn't a "con" but it is something I had to mention - it clouds the tank at first. You are adding dirt to a tank.. it is going to happen. As you can see in the pictures, you can barely see in the tank at all. I couldn't even see my fish at one point. They were fine, they were in the tank as I swapped substrate and they were very curious and happy fish. After a few hours of running the filter it was crystal clear again.

Only complaint I have is that it's a a bit over priced and when you get the bag, there is a lot of water inside so that adds to the heaviness.
All in all, if it was a bit cheaper it would be the perfect buy in my opinion.
